中天竺中迦毘羅国の浄飯王を父とし、摩耶夫人を母とする。浄飯王即位三十年、卯月八日寅の刻に誕生された。四方各七歩を踏み、手で天地を指して曰く「四維上下、唯我独尊」と。薩婆悉達と号する。『法苑珠林』『稽古略』等に詳しい。

■The Birth of Shakyamuni
King Śuddhodana of Kapilavastu in Central India was his father, and Queen Maya was his mother. In the thirtieth year of King Śuddhodana's reign, on the eighth day of the fourth month at the hour of the tiger (3-5 AM), he was born. He took seven steps in each of the four directions, pointed to heaven and earth with his hands, and declared "In the four quarters, above and below, I alone am the World-Honored One." He was called Sarvārthasiddha. Details can be found in the "Forest of Pearls in the Garden of Dharma" and "Brief Records of Ancient Times."

■Shakyamuni Leaving the Mountain
At nineteen years old, on the eighth day of the second month, the prince left the royal palace and went to Mount Daṃḍaloka. After twelve years of austere practices, at thirty years old, at the Vajra Seat in the Bodhi Grove in Magadha, in the thirty-third year of King Zhao (year of Wu-Yin), on the eighth day of the twelfth month when the morning star appeared, he suddenly attained great enlightenment and achieved perfect awakening.

The Avatamsaka teaching for thirty-seven days, the Agama teaching for twelve years, the Vaipulya and Prajñāpāramitā teachings for thirty years, the Lotus teaching for eight years, and the Nirvana teaching for one day and one night. The "Blue Cliff Record" states that Shakyamuni lived in the world for forty-nine years, holding 360 assemblies to expound the Dharma. The sudden teaching and provisional-ultimate teaching—this is called the teaching of one complete lifetime.

At eighty years old, by the Hiranyavati River near Kuśinagara, between the twin śāla trees, he entered nirvana at midnight on the fifteenth day of the second month. This corresponds to the thirty-sixth year of King Mu of Zhou (year of Ren-Shen).
