**上品上生**
上品上生とは、一つには慈心にして殺さず、諸々の戒行を具えること。二つには大乗方等の経典を読誦すること。三つには六念を修行し、回向して発願し、彼の国（極楽浄土）に往生せんと願うこと（である者が、この位に生まれる）。

**上品中生**
上品中生とは、必ずしも方等の経典を受持・読誦するには及ばないが、その義趣（意味・趣旨）をよく解している（者が、この位に生まれる）。
阿弥陀仏が大衆に囲繞されて紫金台を持し、行者の前に至る。

上品下生とは、また因果を信じ、ただ道心を発して極楽国に往生せんとする（者が、この位に生まれる）。

**Highest Grade, Highest Level of Rebirth**
Those who are born in the Highest Grade, Highest Level are: first, those who are compassionate and do not kill, and who fully observe all the precepts; second, those who read and recite the Mahāyāna Vaipulya sūtras; third, those who practice the six mindfulnesses (roku-nen), dedicate the merit, make a vow, and aspire to be born in that land (the Pure Land).

【Lower Right: Highest Grade, Middle Level (Jōbon Chūshō)】
**Highest Grade, Middle Level of Rebirth**
Those who are born in the Highest Grade, Middle Level are those who do not necessarily receive, uphold, read, and recite the Vaipulya sūtras, but who thoroughly understand their meaning and import.
Amida Buddha, surrounded by a great assembly, carries the purple-golden lotus dais and comes before the practitioner.

**Highest Grade, Lowest Level of Rebirth**
Those who are born in the Highest Grade, Lowest Level are those who also believe in causality (karma), and who simply arouse the mind of the Way (dōshin) and aspire to be born in the land of Ultimate Bliss (Gokuraku).
At the end, Amida Buddha, Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), Seishi (Mahāsthāmaprāpta), and five hundred transformation Buddhas (ke-butsu) offer praise, saying: "Child of the Dharma (hōshi), you have now aroused the aspiration for rebirth."

**Middle Grade, Highest Level of Rebirth**
Those who are born in the Middle Grade, Highest Level are those who receive and uphold the five precepts, the eight precepts, and all the other precepts, do not commit the five grave offenses, and aspire to be born in the Western Pure Land.
Amida Buddha appears together with many monks (bhikṣus); one makes a gesture of reverence toward the Buddha, and immediately one is born in the world of Ultimate Bliss.
