九品の弥陀
【右上】
■上品上生
上品上生とは、第一に慈心をもって殺生せず、すべての戒行を具え、第二に大乗方等経典を読誦し、第三に六念を修行して回向し、発願してかの国に生まれることを願う者である。
【右下】
■上品中生
上品中生とは、必ずしも方等経典を受持読誦する必要はないが、その義理をよく理解する者である。阿弥陀仏が大衆に囲まれて紫金の台を持し、修行者の前に至る。

■上品下生
上品下生とは、また因果を信じ、ただ道心を発して極楽国に生まれる者である。臨終に阿弥陀仏、観音、勢至、五百の化仏が讃えて言う「法子よ、汝は今発生せり」と。

■中品上生
中品上生とは、五戒・八戒・諸戒を受持し、五逆を造らず、西方に生まれることを願う者である。阿弥陀仏が諸々の比丘とともに、仏に礼をなして、即座に極楽世界に生まれる。

The Nine Grades of Amida
【Upper Right】
■Upper Grade, Superior Birth
Those of the upper grade, superior birth are: first, those who have compassionate hearts and do not kill, possessing all precepts and conduct; second, those who recite Mahayana Vaipulya sutras; third, those who practice the six mindfulnesses, dedicate merit, make vows, and wish to be born in that land.

■Upper Grade, Middle Birth
Those of the upper grade, middle birth do not necessarily need to uphold and recite Vaipulya sutras, but they well understand their meaning and principles. Amida Buddha, surrounded by a great assembly, carries a purple-gold dais and comes before the practitioner.

■Upper Grade, Inferior Birth
Those of the upper grade, inferior birth also believe in cause and effect, but simply generate the aspiration for the Way and are born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. At the time of death, Amida Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, and five hundred transformation buddhas praise them, saying: "Dharma-son, you have now achieved birth."

■Middle Grade, Superior Birth
Those of the middle grade, superior birth uphold the five precepts, eight precepts, and various precepts, do not commit the five grave offenses, and wish to be born in the Western [Pure Land]. Amida Buddha, together with various monks, performs obeisance to the Buddha, and they are immediately born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
