Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas (continued) 【Upper Right】 ■Kōmyōō Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of Radiant Light King) First, this "radiant light" represents the manifestation of wisdom. "King" signifies the meaning of supreme nobility and leadership. From the passage, "May our radiant light surpass the light of the sun, moon, and all Buddhas," he is called the King of Radiant Light. This also appears in the Yuanjue lüeshu (Abbreviated Commentary on the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment). 【Lower Right】 ■Sankaiē Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of Mountain-Sea Wisdom) The eighth volume of the Xuanzan states: "Holding the wisdom of the precious treasury, as unfathomably deep as the ocean, and a name as lofty and difficult to look up to as a mountain — thus the name Mountain-Sea Wisdom." The meaning of the text is that the profundity and loftiness of his wisdom and virtue are likened to mountains and seas, and thus this becomes his name. 【Upper Left】 ■Vajragarbha Bodhisattva (Diamond Treasury) In Sanskrit, "Vajra" (伐羅闍, *Batsu-ra-ja*) is translated into Chinese as "金剛" (kongō/vajra). Vajra means something that is both hard and sharp. The wisdom of this bodhisattva is likewise. That煩悩 (earthly passions) and external demons cannot invade or move him represents the quality of "hardness," while his ability to break through all obstacles and dispel people's doubts represents the quality of "sharpness." Because he possesses inexhaustible merit, he is called "Treasury." 【Lower Left】 ■Kegon Bodhisattva (Flower Adornment) In the passage on the upper direction in the Amitābha Sūtra, the phrase "Buddha whose body is adorned with flowers of varied colors and treasures" appears. Regarding the causes of one's own practice, the flowers are like precious jewels and adorn the body of fruition virtue — as explained in the Dayou Jujie (Verse Commentary by Dayou). Ultimately, the name of this bodhisattva illustrates the principles of cause and effect.
