■獅子吼菩薩（ししくぼさつ）
獅子とは、梵語（サンスクリット語）で「迦羅（から）」という。これを漢訳して「獅子」、あるいは「無畏（むい）」と訳す。この名を付け給うことは、説法して衆生を済度するにあたって、無畏の威徳を得給いし故である。獅子は獣の中の王であり、遊行するにあたって畏れがないからである。

■大威徳菩薩（たいいとくぼさつ）
「大」とは普遍・広博の義、「威」とは威勢の義、「徳」とは徳義・功徳の義、「王」とは自在の義である。つまるところ、大いなる威勢の道徳をもって明らかに衆生を済度する大悲が、自由無量であるが故に「大威徳王」という。

「定」とは禅定の義、自由無碍の義である。

**Shishiku Bodhisattva (Lion's Roar Bodhisattva)**
"Lion" in Sanskrit is called *kara* (迦羅). This is translated into Chinese as "lion" (獅子), or alternatively rendered as "fearlessness" (無畏). The reason this name was given is that in preaching the Dharma and saving sentient beings, this bodhisattva attained the awe-inspiring virtue of fearlessness. The lion is the king among beasts, having no fear as it roams about.
**Daii Toku Bodhisattva (Great Awe-Inspiring Virtue Bodhisattva)**
"Great" (大) means universally pervasive and vast; "awe-inspiring" (威) means majesty and authority; "virtue" (徳) means virtuous merit and meritorious achievement; "king" (王) means sovereign freedom. In sum, because the great compassion (*mahākaruṇā*) that clearly saves sentient beings through the great awe-inspiring moral power is boundless in its freedom, this bodhisattva is called "Great Awe-Inspiring Virtue King."
**Jō Jizai-ō Bodhisattva (King of Meditative Sovereignty Bodhisattva)**
"Jō" (定) means meditative concentration (*dhyāna*), and also means unobstructed freedom.
**Dai Jizai-ō Bodhisattva (Great Sovereign King Bodhisattva)**
The *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* states: "Great means that its nature is vast and expansive, like empty space." The *Sutra of Immeasurable Life* (Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra) states: "With regard to all things and phenomena, one acts freely according to one's will." This is because this bodhisattva is greatly sovereign and unhindered in miraculous transformation.
