### ■千手観音（せんじゅかんのん）
千手とは、実際には四十臂（ひ）である。二十五有（う）にそれぞれ四十臂があることから、合計すると千手となる。

### ■十一面観音（じゅういちめんかんのん）
前（正面）の三面は慈悲の相、左の三面は忿怒の相、右の三面は牙を上向きにした相である。善を見ては喜び、悪を見ては嘲って笑う顔つきである。本体の正面は、笑わず怒らず、善悪不二の相である。そして頂上の仏は、過去の正法明如来であり、これを「対果形因」と言う。

## The Seven Kannon (Shichi Kannon)
### **Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara)**
The "thousand hands" are in reality forty arms (*hi*/bāhu). Since each of the Twenty-Five Realms of Existence (*nijūgo-u*) has forty arms associated with it, the total comes to one thousand hands.

The root mudrā is the Nine-Headed Dragon Seal (*Kuzuryū-in*). Also known as "Daihi Kanzeon" (Avalokiteśvara of Great Compassion).

### **Batō Kannon (Horse-Headed Avalokiteśvara)**
The profundity of this Venerable One's responsive function and beneficial power is expressed thus: just as a horse thinks of nothing but water and grass, and knows nothing else beyond that — meaning that this bodhisattva's compassion is single-mindedly focused on saving sentient beings without concern for anything else.

### **Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara)**
The three faces in front express compassion; the three faces on the left express wrathful fury (*funnō*); the three faces on the right have tusks directed upward — these are faces that rejoice upon seeing good and mock with laughter upon seeing evil. The main frontal face of the central body neither laughs nor shows anger, and represents the non-duality of good and evil. Furthermore, the Buddha at the crown of the head is Shōhōmyō Nyorai (Samyakdharma-prabhāsa Tathāgata) of the past; this relationship is referred to as *taika gyōin* ("the fruit-body corresponding to the cause-body").

### **Shō Kanzeon (Sacred Avalokiteśvara)**
In the left hand, [this bodhisattva] holds an unopened lotus bud (*mifu renge*). This represents the form of the bodhisattva about to cause the *Myōhō Renge* (Wondrous Dharma Lotus) of all sentient beings — not yet bloomed — to open and bloom fully.
