**■千手観音（せんじゅかんのん）**
千手は実際には四十臂（ひ／腕）である。二十五有（にじゅうごう）それぞれに四十の臂があることから、合計すると千手となる。

**■馬頭観音（ばとうかんのん）**
この尊の応用利益（おうようりやく）の甚深（じんじん）なることは、馬がただ水草のみを念じて、それ以外のことは知るところがないようなものだ、という意味である。

**■十一面観音（じゅういちめんかんのん）**
前の三面は慈悲の相、左の三面は忿怒（ふんぬ）の相、右の三面は牙を上向きにしている。善を見ては喜び、悪を見ては嘲（あざけ）り笑う顔である。本体の正面は笑わず怒らず、善悪不二（ぜんあくふに）の相である。そして頂上の仏は過去世の正法明如来（しょうほうみょうにょらい）であり、これを「対果形因（たいかぎょういん）」と言う。

左手には未敷蓮華（みふれんげ／まだ開いていない蓮の花）を持つ。一切衆生の妙法蓮華がいまだ開いていないのを、まさに開かせようとなさっている姿である。

## The Seven Kannon (Shichi Kannon)
### **Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara)**
In reality, the "thousand hands" consist of forty arms. Since each of the Twenty-Five Realms of Existence (*nijūgo-u*) has forty arms associated with it, the total comes to one thousand hands.

The profundity of this venerable one's responsive benefits is like that of a horse, which thinks only of water and grass and knows nothing beyond that — conveying the meaning that his compassionate activity is entirely single-minded and instinctive.

### **Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara)**
The three faces at the front display an expression of compassion; the three faces on the left display an expression of wrathful fury; the three faces on the right have their fangs pointing upward. These faces express joy upon seeing good, and mockery and laughter upon seeing evil. The main central face of the fundamental body neither laughs nor grows angry, representing the non-duality of good and evil. Furthermore, the Buddha at the crown of the head is the *Shōhōmyō Nyorai* (Tathāgata of Correct Dharma Radiance) from a past age, and this is referred to as *taika gyōin* ("manifesting the cause in the form of the fruit").

### **Shō Kanzeon (Sacred/Holy Avalokiteśvara)**
In the left hand, he/she holds an *mifure renge* — a lotus blossom not yet opened. This form expresses the intent to cause the wondrous Dharma-lotus of all sentient beings, not yet bloomed, to open and bloom.
