The thirteenth patriarch Nāgārjuna Bodhisattva was a descendant of Brahmins from South India. He appeared seven hundred years after the Buddha left this world. On the day of his first birth, he was under a tree, and because he entered the dragon palace and first attained enlightenment there, he is called Nāgārjuna (Dragon Tree). This is recorded in the "Fozu Tongji" (Chronicle of Buddhist Patriarchs).
