According to the *Genkō Shakusho*, this deity is Izanagi-no-mikoto. In the first year of the Yōrō era, the Buddhist monk Taichō climbed Mount Hakusan and devoted himself to recitation. Suddenly, a great nine-headed dragon appeared. When it was revealed that this was a manifestation in an expedient form, the Eleven-faced Kannon (Ekādaśamukha Avalokiteśvara) appeared.

This is the foundation of Japan's foremost site of great spiritual power, the Kumano Issho Gongen, which came from the land of Geidanno-kuni to our realm, and flew to both the source of the Otonashigawa River in the Muro District of Kii Province and to the royal treasure hall at Byōbu-ga-oka. The honji is Kannon (Avalokiteśvara).

Appeared in the fifth year of Emperor Kōrei's reign. Mount Fuji in Suruga Province is an incomparable sacred mountain unmatched across the three realms. Emerging from the emptiness of the Sanskrit letter "A," it demonstrates the principle of the three contemplations in a single mind, subtly reveals the perfect and immediate enlightenment of the summit, and embodies the principle of the unity of the three mysteries. For this reason, Emperor Heizei established the main shrine in the first year of the Daidō era, and Emperor Daigo established the Sengen Shrine during the Engi era. This is the Great Shrine Deity. The honji is Dainichi (Mahāvairocana).
