仲哀天皇の御子である応神天皇である。御母は神功皇后である。御誕生の時、白幡四つと赤幡四つが天より降ったので、八幡と号する。本地は阿弥陀如来である。

華厳経において福城長者の子である。初めて入胎の時、その宅内に七宝楼閣が現れ、地下に伏蔵があった。故にこれを善財童子と呼ぶ。文殊菩薩の五百童子の第一である。

In the Avatamsaka Sutra, he is the son of the wealthy elder of Fukujō. When first conceived, seven-treasure pavilions appeared within the residence, with underground treasure vaults. Therefore, he is called Zenzai Dōji. He is the first among Manjusri's five hundred children.
