神仏霊像図彙序
古徳が言うには、「仏に逢っては仏を殺せ、祖に逢っては祖を殺せ」と。その一機一用、一棒一喝は、疑団を催し、名相に執取する者を破るためである。丹霞和尚が木仏像を焼き捨てたようなものである。しかしながら、凡夫庸俗の者が、どうして向上の玄旨を徹見することができようか。それゆえに

The ancient masters said: "If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha; if you meet the patriarch, kill the patriarch." Their single opportunity and single function, one staff and one shout, are meant to arouse the mass of doubt and destroy those who cling to names and forms. This is like Zen Master Danxia who burned wooden Buddha statues. However, how could ordinary people of common understanding possibly penetrate the profound essence of the supreme teaching?
