【諸天】
■日輪（にちりん）
『名義集』に「蘇梨那」、これを日輪と云う。
『造天地経』に云く、仏が宝応菩薩をして日を造らしめたり。
『白虎通』に云く、日の径は千里、周は三千里、天より下ること七千里。
■月輪（がちりん）
『名義集』に云く、「蘇摩」、これには月神と云う。
『造天地経』に云く、仏が吉祥菩薩をして月を造らしめたり。
■北斗（ほくと）
『論語』に北辰と曰う。
『天文志』に北極と曰う。
大星の宮宅、周り七百二十里、中星四百八十里、小星百二十里。
■明星（みょうじょう）
明星とは、月はすでに隠れ、日はいまだ顕れぬ、日夜の中間に出るものなり。明と暗、迷いと悟りを二つに分けぬ、一如の全体なり。
さればこそ、二字合わせて三となりて、明の字は日と月を並べたるゆえ、明星の二字に三光を備えるなり。

【Celestial Deities (Shoten)】
■The Solar Orb (Nichirin)
In the "Dictionary of Names and Meanings" (Myōgi-shū), it is called "Suriya"; in this land it is called the Solar Orb.
The "Sūtra on the Creation of Heaven and Earth" states that the Buddha caused the Bodhisattva Hōō (Precious Response) to create the sun.
The "Baihu Tong" (White Tiger Compendium) states: the sun's diameter is one thousand ri, its circumference three thousand ri, and it descends seven thousand ri below heaven.
■The Lunar Orb (Gachirin)
The "Dictionary of Names and Meanings" states: "Soma" — in this land it is called the Lunar Deity.
The "Sūtra on the Creation of Heaven and Earth" states that the Buddha caused the Bodhisattva Kichijō (Auspicious) to create the moon.
■The Northern Dipper (Hokuto)
The "Analects" refers to it as the "Northern Star" (Hokushin).
The "Treatise on Astronomy" (Tenmonshi) refers to it as the "Northern Pole" (Hokukyoku).
The palace-dwelling of the great star spans 720 ri in circumference; the middle stars span 480 ri; the small stars span 120 ri.
■The Morning/Venus Star (Myōjō)
The Morning Star is that which appears in the interval between night and day — when the moon has already hidden itself and the sun has not yet revealed itself. It is the complete whole of the One Suchness (ichinyō), undivided between light and dark, delusion and enlightenment.
Therefore, when the two characters are combined they make three: the character for "bright" (明) is composed of the sun (日) and moon (月) placed side by side, and so the two characters "Morning Star" (明星) together contain the three luminaries (sankō).
