詰め方の大概はこのようである。ただし各自の思い入れで
どのようにでも詰め方をすべし。ただ同じような
定規にもならぬように詰めるのが良い。
色の取り合わせが専一である。似たる
色が一箇所に寄らぬようにすべし。
また濃い色は中央の方へ置くべし。
重の内多くは奇数なれば…
総じて重詰めもの九種七種五種三種ともに皆味の付け方も切り方
も同じようにならぬが良い。されはとて理屈もなく様々な形に
切られる物ではない。ただ大小長短、丸角など同じようにならぬ心
得えありたし。また重の寸法を見て詰め方の都合の良いように
最初より工面して切らねば、詰め上げた時所々に不揃いの
出来るものなり。詰め方の割りを工面して切り方良くすべし。
一つの懐紙にひじき・蕨・荒布等をすることは甚だ下卑にて悪し。
懐紙はないに如かず。ただし懐紙なしとも詰められるなり。その詰めようは
まず居りの悪き物を重の内ここへ置かんと思う所へいくつでも置いて
さて居りの良き積み重ねになる物をその側へ詰めてこれへもたれかけ
させて詰めればどのようにもなるなり。また崩れやすいしたる物は皆余の
品を詰め終はりて後に穴のある所へそれを入れる。ただしこれは詰め方
の割りあまりの所と思いて始めよりその心して詰めかかるべし。
一つ残らず詰め上げて後、薄板にて平らに軽く押し付ければ見栄えが良い。

In general, for box arrangements of nine, seven, five, or three varieties, it is best that neither the seasoning methods nor cutting styles are uniform. However, this does not mean cutting items into random shapes without reason. One should simply be mindful that sizes large and small, lengths long and short, and shapes round and square should not be uniform. Also, considering the dimensions of the box, one must plan and cut from the beginning to ensure convenient packing, otherwise irregularities will appear in various places when the packing is completed. One should plan the arrangement divisions and cut properly.
Using hijiki seaweed, bracken, or arame kelp on kaiseki paper is extremely vulgar and poor. It is better to have no kaiseki paper at all. However, packing is possible even without kaiseki paper. The packing method is as follows: first, place items that don't sit well wherever you intend to place them in the box, then pack items that stack well beside them, leaning them against each other—this way anything will work. Also, items that easily crumble should all be inserted into available spaces after finishing the packing of other items. However, one should consider this as extra space in the arrangement division and begin packing with this in mind from the start. After packing everything without exception, lightly pressing down evenly with a thin board will improve the appearance.
