短（たん）を隠（かく）さむために申／出（いだ）せし事にて取（とる）に足（たら）ざることに候
しかしながら医術（いじゆつ）は別才（べつさい）にて学問（がくもん）の厚薄（かうはく）によらぬ所
も有之候へども無用（むよう）は有用（いうよう）の地（ち）なりと古人（こじん）も申せし如（ごと）く
人の歩行（ほかう）も一尺（いつしやく）ばかりの道にて済（す）み候へども道／狭（せば）く候へ
ば危（あやう）く有余（いうよ）の地（ち）なれば心安（こゝろやす）く通行（つうかう）も出来（でき）人馬（にんば）に
行遇（ゆきあひ）候時も互（たがひ）によけ安（やす）きが如（ごと）く学業（がくげう）弘（ひろ）く候へば先
さしつかへ少（すくな）きものに候然れども不学（ふがく）にて医術（いじゆつ）に長（ちやう）じ

短所を隠すために言い出したことで、取るに足らないことである。
しかしながら医術は特別な才能によるもので、学問の深浅によらない面もあるけれども、「無用は有用の基盤である」と古人も言ったように、人の歩行も一尺ばかりの道で済むけれども、道が狭ければ危険で、余裕のある道であれば安心して通行もでき、人馬に行き会った時も互いに避けやすいのと同じく、学業が広ければまず支障が少ないものである。しかし不学でも医術に長じた人も稀にいるものである。これはいわゆる特別な才能である。このような人に手厚く学問をさせれば、まさに虎に翼を添えたようになるであろう。また学業が広くても医術が全く下手な
人がいる。これは元々医才がないためで、この人がもし学問をしなければますます下手な医者になるであろう。儒者の品行が悪いのも普通の人の品行の悪さまでではなく、出家の不如法も俗人の不如法ほどではないのと同じで、下手な医者でも学のある者は、下手で不学な医者には大いに勝るであろう。これらの意味をよくよく理解して、暇な時には随分と読書をして、あの妄想心が起こらないように用心し、神明造化の功を助けることが肝要である。

Just as the misconduct of Confucian scholars does not reach the level of ordinary people's misconduct, and the improper behavior of monks is not as bad as that of laypeople, so too a poor doctor with learning greatly surpasses a poor doctor without learning. Understanding these principles well, during leisure time one should diligently read books and take care that such delusional thoughts do not arise, making it essential to assist the work of divine creation.
