　作屋皆不甚高以避海風去地必三四尺許以避地

現代語訳

屋舎について

家を建てる際は皆あまり高くしないのは海風を避けるためで、地面から必ず三、四尺ほど上げるのは地面の湿気を避けるためである。民間で家を建てる時は、一間ごとに瓦の棟が四方に出て亭子のような様子をしている。瓦は中国の瓦のようで極めて堅く厚い。これでなければ台風を防げないからである。煉瓦の壁はなく、どの家も四方に皆板を挟んで設置して壁としている。庭院の中の囲い壁や外の囲い壁は牡蠣殻の石を積み重ねて作る。首里の大きな家の外囲い壁は一面を磨いて削り、切り成したように極めて堅固で整っている。

煉瓦の地面はなく、多くは板を高く三、四尺ほど組んだ床を用いる。

門や窓は皆戸軸がなく、上下の枠に皆二重の溝を刻んで門扇をその中に設置し、左右に押し移動させて開閉とする。室中は席で草を包み、厚さ一寸ほどで、縁を青で

On Houses and Buildings

When constructing houses, they are all built not very high in order to avoid sea winds, and are necessarily raised three to four shaku from the ground to avoid ground moisture. When common people build houses, each bay has roof ridges extending in four directions like a pavilion. The roof tiles are like Chinese tiles, extremely hard and thick. Without these, they could not withstand typhoons. There are no brick walls; every house has boards set up on all four sides as walls. The surrounding walls in courtyards and outer enclosing walls are built by piling up oyster shell stones. The outer enclosing walls of large houses in Shuri are polished and carved smooth on one side, appearing as if cut and shaped, extremely solid and orderly.

There are no brick floors; mostly they use raised wooden floors about three to four shaku high.

Doors and windows all lack door pivots; the upper and lower frames all have double grooves carved into them, with door panels set within them that slide left and right for opening and closing. Inside rooms, they use mats that wrap grass about one sun thick, edged with blue
