筆
筆は鹿の毛を用いて作られており、軸が短く、中国の筆と比べてかなり短い。長さはわずか四寸余りである。竹の軸は蘆に似ており、軽いことを重視している。軸の端には番字（現地文字）の小さな札が付いている。筆帽にはすべて小さな開口部がある。国人が文字を書く際は、皆机に寄りかからず、立ったり座ったりしながら、紙の端を巻き込んで左手で挟み、手のひらの中で固定し、手首を浮かせて書く。筆に墨を付ける時は、筆を横にして寝かせて巻く。

紙
紙は繭を原料として作られている。きめが細かく堅く白いものは極めて良質である。その黄色で質の粗いものは「事宜紙」と名付けられている。すべて正方形に切って使用し、高麗の繭紙と全く同じである。質の厚いものは紫色に染めて衣服にすることができ、「内用紙」と名付けられている。印花のあるものは錦のように極めて美しい。

耕作器具
鋤や犂はすべて中国のものを模倣しているが、より軽く小さく作られている。高い田は雨水にのみ頼り、低い田は段々に並べて泉水を引いて下から灌漑している。その江や湖で潮の満ち引きがあるところはすべて塩水で灌漑に使えないため、桔皐や戽斗などの道具はない。

織り道具
機織り機の形は、座る部分は狭く外側は広く、高さは一尺五、六寸、低い足の部分はわずか三、四寸ほどである。機の前には竹竿を一本立て、下に垂らして引っ張って上下させる。梭の長さは四寸余りで皂角のような形をしている。器具は軽く小さく、地面に座って使うのに便利である。どの家にもこれがあり、蕉糸を紡いで雑多に縫い合わせて織っている。

Writing Brushes
Brushes are made using deer hair, with short handles that are considerably shorter compared to Chinese brushes, measuring only about four inches in length. The bamboo shaft resembles reed and is chosen for its lightness. At the end of the shaft, there is a small tag with local characters. All brush caps have small openings. When the people of this country write, they do not lean on desks; whether standing or sitting, they roll up the end of the paper, clamp it with their left hand, hold it steady in their palm, and write with a suspended wrist. When dipping the brush in ink, they hold the brush horizontally and roll it while lying flat.

Paper
Paper is made from cocoons. Those with fine texture that are firm and white are of excellent quality. The yellow, loose-textured ones are called "shigi paper." All are cut into square sheets for use, exactly the same as Korean cocoon paper. The thick-quality ones are dyed purple and can be made into clothing, called "naiyō paper." Those with printed patterns are extremely beautiful, like brocade.

Farming Tools
Hoes and plows all imitate Chinese designs but are made lighter and smaller. High fields rely only on rainwater, while lower fields are arranged in tiers with spring water channeled down for irrigation. Where rivers and lakes connect to tidal waters, all are saline and cannot be used for irrigation, so there are no shadoof or water-lifting tools.

Weaving Tools
The loom is shaped with a narrow sitting area that widens outward, standing one foot five to six inches high, with low legs of only three to four inches. In front of the loom stands a single bamboo pole that hangs down and is pulled to move up and down. The shuttle is over four inches long, shaped like a soap pod. The equipment is light and small, convenient for sitting on the ground. Every household has these, spinning banana fiber and weaving it together in various combinations.
