船

貢船の様式は福州の鳥船にほぼ似ており、船の両脇に櫓を設け、左右に各2本ずつ備えている。船の長さは8丈余り、幅は2丈5、6尺である。前明の洪武・永楽年間にはすべて海船を賜与されていたが、後に使臣が自ら工料を準備して福州で改造することを請うた。今では本国の船工も様式通りに自ら造ることができる。各島を往来し物資を運ぶ船は、大小を問わずすべて尖底で、底板が鱗のように重なっている。太平山船は装飾的な欄干を加えて他と異なるため、これを図示した。小船はすべて独木を刳り抜いて作られており、極めて軽快である。村民や漁民はみなこれを用いている。一艘では積載しきれない場合は、二艘を並べて使用する。

Boats

The style of tribute ships roughly resembles the bird boats of Fuzhou, with oars installed on both sides of the ship, two on each side. The ships are over eight zhang long and two zhang five to six chi wide. During the Hongwu and Yongle eras of the former Ming dynasty, all sea vessels were bestowed by the court, but later envoys requested to prepare their own materials and funds for reconstruction in Fuzhou. Now the shipwrights of this country can also construct them according to the proper style. The ships that travel between the islands carrying cargo are all sharp-bottomed, large and small alike, with bottom planks overlapping like scales. The Taiping Mountain ships are distinguished by the addition of decorative railings, so I have illustrated them. Small boats are all made by hollowing out single logs and are extremely light and swift. Village people and fishermen all use them. When one boat cannot carry the full load, they use two boats together.
