現代語訳

蚊と蠅は皆冬に発生する。蟻は中国と同じであるが、腹が水晶のように光っており、これを殺すと点のような水が出る。

鱗を持つ魚類には鮫、鯉、鮒、鰻、鰍、蝦、金魚、銀縷魚がいる。珍しい産物として毛魚、針魚、燕魚等がある。その緑色、紅色、緑の鱗、紅の模様が五彩で相間し、或いは円く或いは長いものは数え切れない。土地の人はその色やその形によって呼んでいるが、皆正式な名前はない。海魚を生のまま切り片にして、夜中の暗い所で見ると、皆明るく透けて緑の火光があり、色は熱河の夜光木のようである。

【毛魚】細く小さく、外見は腐ったもののようだが、咀嚼すると味がある。福建人は皆これを重んじて珍品とする。七月朔日の前後五日、八月朔日の前後五日に海中で陣を排して出現する。他の月にはそうではない。

【針魚】頭に針の形を戴く、鱵とも名づける。【靴魚】頭が靴のように長い。

【燕魚】燕のようで翼があり飛ぶことができる。古名は鳐、俗に飛魚と呼ぶ。

甲羅を持つ族には亀、黿、鼈がいる。珍しいものに玳瑁等がある。

【玳瑁】甲は亀や鼈のようで、首尾の形がやや尖っており、頭に淡紅色を帯びる。

【海馬】馬の首に魚の身体、鱗がなく肉は豚のよう。なかなか得難く、得た者は先ず以て王に進献する。

【石鮔】首が円く、下に八本の手が生えており脚がない。土地の人は皆これを料理に入れる。

【蟳】肉が最も佳く、味は蟹のようだが大きく、性質は温和。【蟹】は大小の種族がそれぞれ異なる。小蟹で五色のものがあり、両螯は左が大きく右が小さい。小さい方で食物を取り、大きい方で外敵を防ぐ。ただ大螯のみ朱紅色で、これを照火と名づける。小蟹で螺の殻の中に居るものを寄生と名づける。

英語訳

Mosquitoes and flies all emerge in winter. Ants are the same as in China, but their abdomens shine like crystal, and when killed, they emit droplet-like water.

Scaled fish include sharks, carp, crucian carp, eels, loaches, shrimp, goldfish, and silver-thread fish. Unusual products include hair fish, needle fish, swallow fish, and others. Their green and red colors, green scales, and red patterns intermingle in five colors, some round and some long, too numerous to count. The local people call them by their colors and shapes, but none have proper names. When sea fish are cut into raw slices and viewed in dark places at night, they all appear bright and translucent with green firelight, colored like the luminescent wood of Rehe.

【Hair fish】Small and thin, appearing rotten from the outside but flavorful when chewed. Fujian people all value this as a delicacy. They appear in formation in the sea for five days before and after the first day of the seventh month, and five days before and after the first day of the eighth month. In other months they do not.

【Needle fish】Head shaped like a needle, also called halfbeak. 【Boot fish】Head long like a boot.

【Swallow fish】Like swallows with wings and able to fly. Ancient name is ray, commonly called flying fish.

Shelled creatures include turtles, soft-shelled turtles, and terrapins. Unusual ones include hawksbill turtles and others.

【Hawksbill turtle】Shell like turtle or terrapin, with head and tail somewhat pointed, head tinged with light red.

【Seahorse】Horse head with fish body, no scales, flesh like pork. Quite difficult to obtain; those who get them first present them to the king.

【Stone octopus】Round head with eight arms growing below, no legs. Local people all use this in cooking.

【Swimming crab】Meat is of finest quality, tastes like crab but larger, with gentle nature. 【Crabs】have different species of various sizes. There are small five-colored crabs with two claws, left large and right small. The small one is used for feeding, the large one for defense. Only the large claw is vermillion red, called "fire-illuminator." Small crabs that live in snail shells are called "parasites."
