I aspired to medicine at the age of twenty, initially studying books under Master Hokumei in Kyoto, then traveling to Edo to receive instruction from Master Shūan. Upon completing my studies and returning to my hometown, I have been practicing medicine for many years. In the past, Master Kagawa gained renown in Edo through obstetrics. I once used his works "Sanron" (Treatise on Childbirth) and "Jijitsu" (Facts) to personally examine pregnant women in the neighborhood. Regardless of their social status, I diagnosed the condition of their fetuses - approximately several dozen cases in total. Master Kagawa's teachings became clearly comprehensible to my mind. Just as even the keen craftsmanship of Lilou cannot create squares and circles without rulers and compasses, the way of medicine also cannot accomplish its techniques without principles. read it several hundred times, and also examined several hundred pregnant women. I increasingly came to know that Master Kagawa's profound insights do not deceive me. Regarding surgical procedures, I studied the "Sanron-yoku" in detail and also found information in "Kaitai Shinsho" (New Book of Anatomy). Recently I heard about theories concerning pregnant women from England, which correspond with Master Kagawa's explanations. Moreover, regarding methods of health preservation, what the ancient sages expounded is quite extensive. Their techniques are complete and perfect. However, because the language is concise and archaic, how could anyone easily understand it unless they are broadly learned with strong memory? Women in remote villages who lose their lives due to difficult childbirth are frequently found. This is truly pitiable. Therefore, I have compiled the teachings of the ancients and recorded them in the national language (Japanese) to make them easily understandable for women and children.
