　作屋皆不甚高以避海風去地必三四尺許以避地

【屋舎】
家を建てる際は皆あまり高くしない。これは海風を避けるためである。地面からは必ず三、四尺ほど離して建てる。これは地面の湿気を避けるためである。民間の家屋では、一間ごとに瓦の棟が四方に向かって突き出ており、あずまやのような様式になっている。瓦は中国の■瓦のようで、極めて堅く厚い。これでなければ台風を防ぐことができないからである。煉瓦の壁はなく、どの家も四方に皆板を挟んで設置して壁としている。庭院の中の囲い塀及び外囲いの塀には蠣石を積み重ねて造る。首里の大きな家の外囲い塀は一面を磨いて削り、切り揃えたように極めて堅固で整っている。
煉瓦の床はなく、多くは板を高く三、四尺ほど張っている。

【Houses and Buildings】
When constructing houses, they are all built not very high in order to avoid sea winds. They are necessarily built three to four shaku above the ground to avoid ground moisture. In common residential construction, each room has roof ridges extending in four directions like a pavilion style. The roof tiles are like Chinese ■ tiles, extremely hard and thick. Without this type, they would not be able to withstand typhoons. There are no brick walls; every house has boards set up on all four sides as walls. The courtyard enclosure walls and outer enclosure walls are built by piling up oyster shells. The large houses in Shuri have outer enclosure walls that are polished and carved on one side, appearing as if cut uniformly, extremely solid and orderly.
There are no brick floors; most use wooden floors raised about three to four shaku high.
Doors and windows all lack door pivots. Both upper and lower thresholds have double grooves carved into them to install door panels, which slide left and right within these grooves for opening and closing.
