There are also occasionally those who trim and arrange the mustache on the upper lip.
【Five Officials Chief (Gokan-sei)】
In the country, only three types of people all shave their hair like monks. One is the medical official called Gokan-sei (Five Officials Chief). One is those who serve tea in the royal palace, called Sōsō and also called Ochayu (御茶湯), numbering six people. There are also six people who manage garden irrigation, all of whom completely shave their hair and wear black six-ridged curtain-topped hats with wide brims, called kata-bōshi (one-sided hats). Over their clothing they often wear a short outer garment called tan-gake. This is about two to three shaku shorter than the great robe and is black in color. These two types of people all serve in roles where they may be summoned at any time, and if they spend time combing their hair, it might interfere with urgent matters, so they all adopt this simplified approach (of shaving their hair).
