現代語訳

屋中では軒を開くのは多くが横向きで、東向きあるいは西向きである。庭院の中には小山を設け、石や樹木、黄楊、烏木、檜、松の類を植える。必ず剪定して束ね、整然とし、あるいは方形、あるいは円形に、層々として趣がある。

茸草は茵のように極めて細やかで軟らかく、柔らかく結び付いて寸ほどの厚さで土と連なり散らばらず、山の上下に満ちて布かれている。あるいは小石の池を置き、魚をその中に畜い、中央に小石を立て、石の上に鉄蕉などの小木を植えて玩賞とする。

村の小径は皆極めて幅広く清潔で、多くは細い葉の小竹を編んで屏籬を作る。葉を剪って斉えさせ、方正に整えて緻密にする。村落は皆このようである。寺院の前にはあるいは黄楊を列植し、剪定して方形に束ね、葉が密で壁のよう、数十歩ほどである。また樹木があり、葉は冬青のようで、六、七月に小さな白花を生じ、香りは梔子のように極めて芬烈である。土名を十里香という。これもまた截って籬屛とする。王宮に至るまで道の両側に数里続く。

　　米廩

米を蔵する廩もまた地上四、五尺に懸けて建てる。遠望すると草亭のようである。下に十六本の柱を施し、柱間の空いた処は人が通行できる。上は版閣とする。官倉は皆このようである。村民はあるいは数家が共同で一亭を作り、米をその中に蔵し、日を分けて守望する。

英語訳

In the houses, windows are mostly opened sideways, facing either east or west. In the courtyards, small artificial hills are constructed with stones and trees - boxwood, ebony, cypress, pine, and the like. These are necessarily pruned and bundled neatly, shaped either square or round, creating layers of visual interest.

The lawn grass is like a carpet, extremely fine and soft, growing in soft clumps about an inch thick, connected to the soil without scattering, spread abundantly over the hills above and below. Sometimes small stone pools are placed with fish kept inside, with a small stone erected in the center, and small trees like iron plantain planted on the stone for ornamental purposes.

The village paths are all extremely wide and clean. Many use woven fine-leafed small bamboo to make screen fences. The leaves are trimmed to be even, arranged squarely and orderly, dense and tight. All villages are like this. In front of temples, boxwood trees are sometimes planted in rows, pruned and bundled into square shapes, with leaves so dense they are like walls, extending for several dozen paces. There are also trees with leaves like holly that produce small white flowers in the sixth and seventh months, with a fragrance like gardenia, extremely fragrant and strong. The local name is "ten-li fragrance." These are also cut to make hedge screens. They continue for several li along both sides of the road leading to the royal palace.

Rice Granaries

Rice storage granaries are also suspended four to five shaku above the ground. From a distance they look like grass pavilions. Sixteen pillars are installed below, with spaces between the pillars allowing people to pass through. The upper part forms a plank pavilion. All official granaries are like this. Village people sometimes have several families jointly build one pavilion, storing rice inside and taking turns keeping watch over it.
