段々（たん〳〵）と医を転（てん）すると幸にして薬か的中（てきちう）して治することあり
是を良医とも謂（い）ひがたし其効ある道理（とうり）を推（おし）究（きは）めて而後（しかうしてのち）に
効（しるし）あらは寔（まこと）に良医といふべし其理を推（おし）究（きは）めされば仮令（たとへ）効（しるし）

段々と医者を転々とすると、幸いにして薬が的中して治ることがある。これを良医とも言い難い。その効果がある道理を推し究めて、その後に効果があるならば、真に良医というべきである。その理を推し究めなければ、たとえ効果があっても偶然の当たりである。たとえ治療を誤るとも、自ら反省してその誤治を知るならば、誤ったとしても良医というべきである。自ら誤治をしてその誤治が分からないのに、まして素人が知るところではない。医者の巧拙は分かり難いものである。第一に戒むべきは素人の薬三昧である。これは本来はけちと愚かさから起こることで、医者の薬を飲めば薬代が高いものだと思って手調合をするのである。それから家内の風邪

引きや自身はもちろん、下男下女に薬を飲ませる。それから仮名付きの薬の本を見て段々薬を調合する。薬で人を誤らせることは医者でさえ分からないのに、素人が分かるはずがない。私が知っている人でこの弊害があった者が、自身の梅毒に手調合の軽粉剤を用いて、後に難治の症状となって種々の名医を迎えたが、ついに鼻も崩れ目もただれて、ついに非業の死を遂げた。それでも非業の死を遂げたことは全く知らない。その他にも薬三昧で大病不治になって非業の死を遂げた人を多く見た。この養生説にも私が経験した方法で世に伝授したい薬方があるけれども、この弊害を恐れて一方も示さない。

When one changes doctors one after another, sometimes the medicine happens to hit the mark and provides a cure. This can hardly be called a good doctor. If there are effects after thoroughly investigating the principles behind those effects, then one can truly call it a good doctor. Without investigating those principles, even if there are effects, it is merely a chance hit. Even if one errs in treatment, if one reflects on oneself and understands that mistaken treatment, even having made mistakes, one should be called a good doctor. When one makes treatment errors without knowing they are treatment errors, how much less can laypeople understand this. The skill or clumsiness of doctors is difficult to discern. and of course for themselves, they give medicine to servants and maids. Then they look at medical books with phonetic annotations and gradually compound medicines. Even doctors do not understand how medicine can harm people, so how could laypeople understand? Among people I know who had this harmful practice, one used self-compounded calomel preparations for his own syphilis, which later became an intractable condition. He summoned various famous doctors, but finally his nose collapsed and his eyes became ulcerated, and he ultimately died an unnatural death. Even so, he had no idea whatsoever that he died an unnatural death. I have seen many other people who became obsessed with medicine, developed serious incurable diseases, and died unnatural deaths. Even in this discourse on health preservation, though I have medicinal formulas from my experience that I would like to transmit to the world, I fear this harmful practice and do not reveal even one formula.
