右はぼうこうの池左り疝（せん）しやくいたみの介りやうぶん

見ればいたみの介がやしきと見へてりつはなる門がまへあり

わたくしは信しう水田のものでござりますがめづらしき
からくりのいとにひかれこれまでまゐり

## 【本文】
《箱：つづき》
ほっと息をついて、竹庵思うよう、「昔話の蟒蛇（うわばみ）に飲まれし人はこういうものであろうか」と思いながらたどり行くに、一つの広野へ出たりと見れば、傍らに方角杭（ほうじくい）ありて、「右は膀胱（ぼうこう）の池、左は疝（せん）しゃく痛みの介（いたみのすけ）領分」としるせり。竹庵これを見て、左の道へ坂を下り見れば、痛みの介が屋敷と見えて、凛々しき門構えあり。ようようたどり行き、門のそばへ立ち寄り、門番に向かい、
「わたくしは信州水田の者でございますが、めずらしきからくりの糸に引かれ、これまで参りましたが、道が知れいで（わからなくて）難儀いたします。どうぞ一夜の宿りをお貸しなされてくださりませ」
と言えば、門番とつくとあらため（じっくりと改めて見て）、「さてさて、不思議なことだ。人でも魚でも青物でも、包丁目はもちろん、いずれは歯のあとがあるはずなんぼ頭が丸いとて、その身のそのまま丸のみとは、うわばみ療法（りょう）ではあるまいし、よっぽど珍しいことだ。そして、まあ、手前は何商売じゃ」
と尋ねれば、ここぞと竹庵せき払いして、
「ごろう事（ご老いこと）は、唐（もろこし）・耆婆（ぎば）・扁鵲（へんじゃく）が落胤（おとしだね）……」

「……はるか此の日の本へ渡りし丹波の雅忠（まさただ）が後胤（こういん）に、藪竹庵（やぶちくあん）という、生き薬師（いきやくし）なり」
と言えば、番人大いに驚き、「イヤ、此の世界にては医者や薬師は大禁物（だいきんもつ）なり。さすれば、一晩の事はおろか、半時（はんとき）なりとも置くことならず。」

Letting out a sigh of relief, Chikuan thought to himself, "So this must be what it is like for those people in the old tales who were swallowed by a great serpent." As he pressed on, he came out into a wide open expanse, and there by the side of the road stood a direction post, reading: "To the right: the Pond of the Bladder (*bōkō*). To the left: the Domain of Itami-no-suke, Lord of Colic Pains." Seeing this, Chikuan made his way down the slope to the left, and before him appeared what seemed to be the mansion of Lord Itami-no-suke, with an imposing and dignified gate. He picked his way there with great difficulty, approached the gate, and addressed the gatekeeper:
"I am from Mizuta in Shinshū Province, and, drawn here by the threads of a wondrous mechanical marvel, I have come this far — though I am quite at a loss as to the way, and find myself in quite a fix. I beg you most humbly to grant me shelter for just one night."
The gatekeeper scrutinized him carefully and said, "Well now, this is a strange thing indeed! Whether it's a person, a fish, or a vegetable — there ought to be marks from the knife, and certainly marks from the teeth. However round in the head one may be, to have been swallowed whole, body and all — that's no orthodox treatment, that is! This is quite remarkable. And just what line of work are you in, exactly?"
Here was his chance. Chikuan cleared his throat and declared:
"I am descended from the great physicians of China — Jīvaka (*Giba*) and Biān Què (*Henjaku*) — my most venerable lineage..."

At this, the gatekeeper was greatly startled and cried, "Why, in this realm, doctors and healers are strictly forbidden items — the greatest of contraband! Therefore, to lodge you for a full night is out of the question — not even for half an hour (*hangtoki*) could we permit you to stay!"
