《箱：つづき》
「さあさあ、早く帰りなされ」と追い立てれば、竹庵聞いて、「これはちかごろ不調法（ぶちょうほう）、千万（せんばん）、頭が丸いゆえについ口から出放題に今のようには申したものの、まことは医者ではございません。村々の日待ち・月待ちなどに雇われて、浄瑠璃（じょうるり）・長唄、または踊りなどをお取りして、酒の興をそえ、世をわたりまする、太鼓持ち（たいこもち）というものでございますが、そのような商売じゃと申したら、らち（埒）もない者と叱りもあらんかと、それゆえ医者と申したれど、まことはかくの通りでございます。どうぞお留めなされてくださりませ」
と、門番の袂（たもと）へ、小玉銀（こだまぎん）の包みを礼（れい）にもらいしを、そっと投げ込めば、門番さっそく飲み込みて、「それはちょうどよい幸い、この節ご親類様方の疳（かん）しゃくさまがたも皆ご逗留（とうりゅう）なれば」

"Come now, come now — be off with you quickly!" the gatekeeper urged, trying to send him away. Hearing this, Chikuan said: "How dreadfully rude of me — a thousand apologies! It's simply because my head is so round that things just tumble out of my mouth without thinking, and I said what I said. But in truth, I am no doctor at all. I am one who is hired for the village vigils — the *himachi* and *tsukimachi* gatherings — where I perform *jōruri* recitations, *nagauta* songs, and dancing, adding to the merriment of the drinking party and making my way in the world: I am what is known as a *taikomochi*, a professional jester and entertainer. I thought that if I told you such a trade, you might scold me as a worthless good-for-nothing, and so I claimed to be a doctor — but the truth is exactly as I have now told you. Please, I beg you, do allow me to stay."
With these words, he quietly tossed into the gatekeeper's sleeve a small package of *kodama-gin* — a little silver coin he had received as a gift. The gatekeeper wasted no time in pocketing it, and said: "Why, this is perfectly fortunate timing! Just at this moment, various members of the household — the Lords of Irritability (*kanshaku-sama*) among the relatives — are all in residence here..."
