## 【Main Text】 Seeing that the patient had fallen asleep, Chikuan said, "As I too have been tending to patients since last evening and have not rested a wink, I shall take a little nap here beside the master as his night companion." The mistress of the house replied, "In that case, let me bring you a pillow." "No no," said Chikuan, "please don't trouble yourself. Being a monk of sorts, wherever I go I am always short of pillows, so I have brought my own tied pillow along with me." And with that, he pulled from his breast the very pillow bestowed upon him by the deity of Kumano, flopped down beside the patient, and — as if by a miracle of divine favor — fell into a deep, heedless slumber before he knew it. In his dream, a great hulking man came toward him with his mouth wide open, crying out: "Hear ye, hear ye! Step right up to the great mechanical marvel of the *kudari-bara* — a belly of great drinking! Enter herein and witness the spectacle! Your money will be returned on the way out, returned it shall be!" Watching this, Chikuan thought to himself, "Why, this is just like the old Chinese tale of Huchōbō, who entered a small jar and set up a grand mechanical world of heaven and earth within it — this fellow must be of the same sort!" Drawing closer, Chikuan approached the man. The man then raised his great voice and rattled off a stream of chatter: "Should the landlord change, the afflictions within include *senshaku* cramps, stabbing pains, loose bowels, lower back spasms, colic's tangled strings — all manner of famous sights stretching a hundred fathoms along the road — moxibustion stones, the escape hole of the anus — if they should catch your eye, the wind will come a-flying!" At this, Chikuan cried, "Now's my chance — how cunning!" and, tucking up his kimono skirts, casting aside his haori coat and short sword, he boldly plunged in. Past the enclosure of the gums, over the checkpoint of the throat, he went — to the right lay the airway (*kidō*), to the left the esophagus (*shokudō*) — reckoning the esophagus the better path, he pressed on, and as he came upon the lungs and stomach, he found himself in what seemed a swamp, or perhaps a river, a muddy bog — and at long last, with great difficulty, he arrived. *《Box: Continued on next page》* --- ## 【Lower Right Speech Bubble】 *Chikuan:* "Now, what sort of place is this, I wonder?"
