《箱：つづき》
その由（よし）を御上（おかみ）へ申し上げんと、にこにこものにて奥の方へ入れば、竹庵は心の内に、「さてさて、地獄の沙汰も金次第というが、腹の内でもやっぱり同じことだ」と感心しきりなり。
かくて門番はうはやく（早速）、胸騒ぎ（むなさきつかえ）門（もん）をもって、殿様へ申し上げしに、「太鼓持ちとあらば、こちらへ呼び寄せい」とのご意（ぎよい）、さっそく竹庵を屋敷の内へ伴いける。
ころしも（折しも）、陰鬱（いんうつ）風振り続きたる時節、時ならぬ不順の時候に、疝癪（せんしゃく）領は時こそ来たれ、と門番長屋・侍部屋、喧嘩・口論おびただしく罵り騒ぐを見て、竹庵、腹中（ふくちゅう）かくのごとくなれば、いかさま人々、疝癪にてなんぎするも、ことわりなれ、と心にうなづき、奥へいたり、殿様の相手になり、踊り跳ねて酒を飲みいたるところへ、「ご忠信（ちゅうしん）、ご忠信」と呼ばわって受け来るは、こうこうの腹心（ふくしん）、のど元・つば吉、息継ぎ（いきつぎ）あえずご前に平伏（ひれ）伏し、「この頃、疝癪（せんしゃく）領の患い、もっぱらなることころに、いずくよりかは、薬の大副（だいぶく）、呑んどの関（のんどのせき）を打ち破りて、気の旗はご免と見え、菊の御紋に三日月の旗を翻し、信州上田の薬種屋（やくしゅだな）、雲の町の住人、松屋伝八郎差し元（さしもと）の、家伝（かでん）振り出し煎じのみよし（良し）をはじめとして、あまたの薬種どもが、胸先（むなさき）の原に満ち満ちたり。ご用心ご用心」とぞ言上（ごんじょう）す。
いたみの介これを聞きて、「さては、かねてより聞き及びし、信州上田東山堂の家伝、疝癪湯（せんしゃくゆ）と聞こえし妙薬、攻め来たりしとおぼえたり。」

With every intention of reporting the good news to the lord within, the gatekeeper went off smiling into the inner quarters. Left behind, Chikuan mused inwardly: "Well, well — they say that even the judgments of Hell depend on gold, but it seems that inside the belly, things work just the same way!" He was thoroughly impressed.
Thus the gatekeeper wasted no time: proceeding through the Gate of Chest-Tightness (*Munasaki-tsukae-mon*), he reported to the lord of the domain. "If it's a *taikomochi*, then bring him in," came the order, and Chikuan was promptly escorted inside the mansion.
As it happened, the season had been one of persistently gloomy and unsettled weather — an untimely and irregular climate — and for the Domain of Irritability (*Senshaku-ryō*), this was precisely the moment they had been waiting for. In the gatehouse quarters and the samurai rooms alike, quarreling and arguments broke out in a tremendous uproar of shouting and commotion. Observing this, Chikuan thought to himself: "With the interior of the belly in such a state, it stands to reason that people would suffer terribly from irritability (*senshaku*)." Nodding inwardly at this insight, he proceeded to the inner quarters, where he became the lord's companion, dancing and leaping about and drinking wine — when suddenly a cry rang out: "*Gochūshin! Gochūshin!* — Most loyal report! Most loyal report!"
The one who came rushing in with this message was a trusted intimate of the region — Nodo-moto and Tsuba-kichi, gasping for breath, prostrated themselves before the lord and reported: "Of late, ailments afflicting the Domain of Irritability have become especially severe — and now, from somewhere or other, a great dose of medicine has smashed through the Barrier of Swallowing (*Nondo-no-seki*), apparently having dispensed with the Flag of Qi (*ki no hata*) without leave. Flying the banner of chrysanthemum crest and crescent moon, the forces of Matsuya Denhachirō — a druggist (*yakushu-dana*) of Cloud Town (*Kumo-no-machi*), hailing from Ueda in Shinshū Province, as dispatched by his establishment — have advanced their proprietary infusion, the celebrated family-formula decoction, along with a great many other medicinal agents, and they now fill the plains of the Chest Region (*Munasaki-no-hara*) to overflowing! Take heed, take heed!"
Hearing this, Lord Itami-no-suke declared: "So then — it must be the celebrated Senshaku-yu (*Irritability Decoction*), the wondrous remedy of the Tōzandō establishment of Ueda in Shinshū, of which I have long heard tell — it has come to attack us!"
