##【Main Text】
It is said that this story takes place during the age of the Ashikaga shoguns. In Shinshū, along the Minoji road, past the Kumejibashi bridge, lies the post-town of Shinmachi — a place of rare prosperity for such a rural area. Not far from there, in a village called Takefusa, there lived a man who had practiced medicine for generations, eking out a meager living. He was known as "Yabu Chikuan" — "Chikuan the Quack." By nature he was honest and conscientious, and he threw himself diligently into his trade. Whenever a summons came from a patient's household, he would abandon even a half-eaten bowl of rice and dash off at once. For this, the people all praised him, crying "Dear Chikuan! Dear Chikuan!" However, because he was always dashing about at such a great speed, everyone gave him the nickname "the fleet-footed quack doctor." Those who did not know him assumed from this nickname that his medical skills must be poor — and there was nothing to be done about it. This was just like the case of the "Priest of the Elm Tree" written of in *Tsurezuregusa* — a situation beyond remedy.
Chikuan, being by nature such an honest and earnest soul, had applied himself not only to the practical methods of medicine — restorative and aggressive treatments alike — but had also studied the theoretical side of things to a reasonable degree. Yet he lamented that his skills remained somehow lacking, thinking to himself:
"No matter what, unless I can actually enter into a patient's belly and see for myself, I cannot truly know the root of the disease. But to enter the belly of a living person is an even more difficult feat than Ono no Takamura's supposed journey to Hell and back while still alive. It cannot easily be accomplished. There is nothing for it but to borrow the power of the gods."
Since his local tutelary deity was Kumano Gongen, he made a solemn vow at the shrine, purified himself through fasting and abstinence, and prayed for a full seven days. On the night that completed those seven days, in a dream, an old man suddenly appeared before him and said:
"Splendid, splendid. I am the divine messenger of Kumano Gongen. It is because of the sincerity of your resolve that I have appeared here before you now. Your wish to dedicate yourself to the art of benevolent healing — to enter into the belly of a human being, search out the root of illness, and cure it — is most admirable. Therefore, I bestow upon you this pillow."

## 【Lower Right Page — Speech Bubble】
"Ah, I came this morning without even eating breakfast, so my belly is completely hollow and growling."
---
## 【Lower Left Page — Speech Bubbles (the medicine-seller)】
Medicine-seller says:
"That medicine works well enough, but they say that Senjōkō — the cosmetic remedy — is also very effective."
The same person says:
"For clearing away all manner of toxins and sobering up from drink, Nishimura's Kanroen pills are remarkably good, I tell you."
