## 【Main Text】 "Now, this pillow is neither the famous pillow of Handan — that which the immortal Lü Yi of China gave to a man named Lusheng, letting him dream fifty years of glory and splendor — nor is it the pillow by which Kikujidō preserved his life for five hundred years. It is neither elegant nor clever. It is nothing more than an ordinary tied pillow — the kind belonging to monks and priests — and that is precisely why I give it to you. When you wish to enter into a patient's belly, first perform the abdominal massage (*anpuku*). When the patient falls asleep, you too should lay your head upon this pillow and sleep alongside them. When you do so, you will naturally find yourself entering the belly, and exploring the root of the illness will be entirely within your power. Do not doubt this for even a moment." With a great thunderous rumble — just as the convention dictates — the figure vanished as if wiped from the page, and the dream came to an end. Chikuan came to his senses and sat up. To his amazement, there at his bedside lay a single pillow. Chikuan's joy was beyond measure. "Since this is a divine oracle, there can be no cause for doubt. Whatever the case, I am most grateful," he said, placing the pillow on display in the alcove (*tokonoma*), offering sacred sake before it, and sitting in quiet reverence. Just then, someone came hammering urgently at the front gate — *ton ton ton*. "Who is it? Where have you come from?" he called. Back came the voice of the village errand-runner: "Chikuan-sama! Chikuan-sama! The village headman is suffering from his old complaint — the colic — and his back has seized up something terrible. Please come at once! Quickly, quickly!" And so he was hustled off in haste. --- ## 【Lower Speech Bubbles】 *The old man (divine messenger):* "I bestow upon you this pillow. Do not doubt it for even a moment." *Chikuan:* "I am most grateful. However — using a dream as the plot device for a *kusazōshi* storybook is rather old-fashioned, I must say. But there's really nothing to be done about it."
