## 【Main Text】
Upon hearing the news, Chikuan was greatly pleased. "Indeed," he declared, "among women the great affliction is *shaku* (hysterical convulsions), and among men it is *senki* (colic). And *senki* comes in seven varieties — the so-called 'seven *sen*' — making it the foremost of all difficult ailments. Come now! I shall take the pillow, enter into the belly, and eradicate the colic at its very root!" With that, he set off together with the errand-runner.
And so Chikuan arrived, errand-runner in tow, at the home of the village headman, one Mokurobei. Removing his hood at the front gate, he strode in with an air of tremendous self-importance, calling out, "Excuse me — it is Chikuan!" A maidservant led him inside and slid open the inner screen door. The master of the house, Mokurobei, greeted him warmly: "Oh my, oh my! Welcome, and at such an hour of the night! Come in, come in. Bring the tobacco tray — and some tea as well!" While the pleasantries were still being exchanged, the wife, Ohata, came out from the inner rooms. "Oh, what trouble we have caused you! Come now, won't you have a little something?" Her charming manners and her beauty were not lost on Chikuan, who was, as ever, fond of the ladies. Narrowing his aged, large eyes with pleasure, he said: "My, my — what a delight! You are far too generous in your hospitality. That is precisely why your husband's back is giving him trouble. I have no need of your choicest sake (*morohaku*) — what I should like, from you, is just one sip of the white sake of your fair skin." And with this playful flirtation, he set to work kneading the patient's belly (*anpuku*), until Mokurobei appeared to grow comfortable, and presently drifted off to sleep with a gentle, steady breathing.

*Chikuan:*
