現代語訳
新右衛門は鳥類の様子が面白く、まだ面白そうなこともあるだろうが、先を急いで大山の方へ向かい、不動へ参詣し、それより小田原の方へ駕籠越しのつもりで山道にかかり、足に任せて無性にのめくり回り、やたらに歩いていたが、行けば行くほど茶を一杯飲むことも団子を一本食う所もない。さてはこれは途方もなく道に踏み迷ったと見え、相模の方の陰には災難はないと発せられているが、腹の北の方は差し当たっての災難。杣にでも狩人にでも、しょうしょうは鳥坊にでもあって道を聞きたいとひとりごとを言いながら行く。

Shinemon found the birds' affairs amusing, and though there would likely be more interesting things to see, he hurried ahead toward Mount Oyama to worship at the Fudo temple, then planned to cross by palanquin toward Odawara. He took to the mountain path and walked aimlessly, letting his feet carry him as he wandered about frantically. But the farther he went, there was nowhere to drink even a cup of tea or eat even one dumpling. It seemed he had become hopelessly lost on the road. While it was proclaimed that there would be no disasters in the direction of Sagami, the north side of his belly was facing an immediate disaster. He walked along muttering to himself that he wanted to meet a woodsman, hunter, or even a humble monk to ask for directions.
