現代語訳
烏の後についてきてみれば、鳥類の御役所と見えて、さまざまの願い出があった。鶏の喧嘩の出入りは双方お叱り。稲穂に雀、粟に鶉、いつれも零れたる（こぼれた穂）より他は一向取るまじき旨、仰せ付けられた。「先立って雁・鴨にも申し付けたる通り、百姓の骨を折ったものをただ食うのでは申し済まぬ。零れた分は大切な雑穀だが、この分は勝手に食すべし。また、キツツキは枯れ木の他は一切禁制。」
桜で遊ぶ鶯に御不審のお尋ねありとて、評定の中へ、鳶の縄付きを引き据え、御吟味が始まった。「そのほう、毎々より厳しく申し付けたのに、いかが心得ているのか。豆腐・油揚げを盗んでいる。それを食わなければならないということもあるまい。畢竟、おのれが贅沢のさただ。その他、魚売りの魚をさらうつもりであろうが、四文銭一本さらったとがで、油揚げと思って煙草入れをさらったのみならず、子供が手を引っかかれたとが、また三百（文）が蒲焼きを誂えたことまで、一々露見したのだが、大胆不敵、一々究悪、ご吟味の上、みかんかごに入れ、彼の非人に下されい。」いえ（家・家ごと）の前にさらされるに極まる。
【鳶の台詞】
何ごともわたくしどものようにおぼしめしますが、昼とんびと申すものは人だそうでございます。

Following after the crow, he arrived to find what appeared to be a magistrate's office for birds, where all manner of petitions were being heard. In the matter of a quarrel among chickens, both parties were reprimanded. As for sparrows in the rice fields and quail in the millet, they were all ordered to take only fallen grains and nothing more. "As we have already instructed the geese and ducks: it is inexcusable to simply eat what the farmers have labored over. Fallen grain, though precious as a cereal, may be eaten at your own discretion. Furthermore, woodpeckers are strictly forbidden from pecking anything other than dead trees."
A matter of suspicious inquiry had arisen regarding a bush warbler playing in the cherry blossoms, and a kite was brought in bound with rope before the tribunal for examination. "You have been warned time and again, yet how do you account for yourself? You have been stealing tofu and deep-fried tofu [aburaage]. There can be no excuse that you were compelled to eat such things — this is entirely your own indulgence. Furthermore, it appears you intended to snatch fish from a fishmonger. Not only were you caught stealing a tobacco pouch thinking it was aburaage, and this on top of having already stolen a single four-mon coin, but you also scratched a child's hand, and even the matter of snatching Sanbyaku's [a person's name, lit. "Three Hundred"] kabayaki [grilled eel] order — all of these have come to light one by one. Your brazenness is extraordinary. Having been found guilty of all these offenses upon full examination, you are hereby sentenced to be placed in an orange crate and handed over to the eta [a low-caste group]." The punishment: to be put on public display before people's homes.
