現代語訳
さてまだ行くほどに大きな岩を越え谷を飛んでも道らしき所はなく、一つの岩窟があり、道がすさまじく、熊笹があるので覗いてみれば、大きな暗がりの蔵づくりのような洞穴である。奥の方に二つぴかぴかと光るものがあり、よくよく見れば大熊の目玉で、怒らした顔でタバコを吞んでいるので、びっくりした。この所はさしづめ蓑笠を着る所だが、道より仕方ないので、つまらないが恐る恐る言った。
「ちょっとお頼み申します。私は道に迷った者でございます。小田原の方へはどう参りますか」と無性に丁寧に言えば、「それは遠いな、間違いない。今日は既往二十里ばかり山を歩いただろう。今日は帰られない。まあこちらへ入らせ。さぞ腹が減っただろうが、飯などはないことなので、これを舐め給え」と手を出したのは、あの蟻を塗り付けたものである。「これは冬中の蓄えだ」と差し出すというので舐めてみた所が、なかなか二膳付きのご馳走より美味いこと。どうにも言えない腹加減である。世の人が言う通り、蟻は熊の食べ物だと聞いていたが、舐めるのは今が初めてである。
「私の所は他に茶菓もならず、するし（鮨）も面白くもない所なので、明日は道まで送らせてやりましょう」と田舎の親類より親切に世話をするのは貴いことである。

As he continued walking, he crossed large rocks and leaped over valleys, but there was no place that looked like a proper road. There was one rock cave with a terrible path where bear grass grew, so he peered inside and found a large, dark cave-like structure resembling a storehouse. Deep inside, two things glittered brightly, and when he looked carefully, they were the eyes of a large bear who was smoking tobacco with an angry expression, which startled him greatly. This place was immediately where one should put on a straw raincoat and hat, but having no choice but to ask about the road, though reluctantly, he spoke fearfully.
"Excuse me, I humbly ask for help. I am someone who has lost his way. How do I get to Odawara?" he said with extreme politeness. The bear replied, "That's quite far, no mistake about it. You've probably walked about twenty ri through the mountains today. You can't return today. Well, come inside. You must be very hungry, but since there's no rice or such, please lick this," and what he offered was covered with ants. "This is my winter store," he said, offering it. When Shinemon tried licking it, it was remarkably more delicious than a two-course feast. The feeling in his stomach was indescribable. Just as people say, ants are bear food - he had heard this before, but this was his first time actually tasting them.
"My place has no other tea sweets, and the sushi isn't particularly interesting either, but tomorrow I'll have someone escort you to the road," the bear said, showing more kindness than country relatives would - truly a precious thing.
