現代語訳
どんなに親切にしてくれても、その夜はまんじりともせず、早くも夜が明けてくれば、狼に言いつけて道の分かる所まで送らせた。心右衛門も送りが狼とは聞き伝えて承知しているので、ご生涯大事に足元に気をつけ、道々話しながら歩いていけば、顔つきとは違って「私どもはとかく人間ほど怖いものはございません。人が怖いから脅してみたり、張り込んでみたりします。先から構わなければ、こちらからどうして」と話せば、「いかにもお前たちの気性ではそうであろう。夕べからのみんなの世話は大抵なことじゃない」と空威張りを言いながら、狼は近道を知っているので、昨日の二十里を半日もかからず本街道まで出てきた。
熊が道に迷ってきても一晩でも泊める人間は日本国にはあるまい。俺もその仲間だ。恥ずかしい。

そこらの岩でお休みなさいませ。
新右は獣物世界の厄介になってもお礼に行く。呆れることもなく江の島にも参り、七里ガ浜にかかったところ、大蛤を見てつくづく思ったことには、「花に鳴く鶯、水に住む蛙も歌を詠むのは日本だ」と住吉明神が白楽天を張り込み、また観学院の雀は猛球をさえずったという。雀も四角な文字をひねくり回し、その明かりに海中に入って蛤となった。そうは言っても、升で量るやつらまで雀であろうものなら、人の食う稲穂はないはずだ。この大蛤は元が学者なので、蜃気楼という唐の楽曲を吹いて楽しんでいたのを、新右も面白いので、ふわりとその蛤に乗れば、だんだんとそこへ沈んでいった。新右が思うには、蓑笠の徳があれば竜宮を見てこようという出来心で、ぐっと目口を塞いで蛤任せに行ってしまった。さすがは大黒様はお力のあるものをお貸しなされたと心で楽しむのも可笑しい。
【新右衛門】
欲心にはこの蜃気楼を吹く丁の貸しで見せたい。

No matter how kindly they treated him, that night he couldn't sleep a wink, and when dawn broke early, the bear ordered a wolf to escort him to where the road could be found. Shinemon had heard that his escort would be a wolf and accepted this, so being very careful with his footing for his dear life, as they walked along the path chatting, the wolf said, contrary to his fierce appearance, "We don't find anything as frightening as humans. Because humans are scary, we try to threaten them or lie in wait. If they don't bother us first, why should we?" To this Shinemon replied, "Indeed, that would be your nature. Everyone's hospitality since last evening has been extraordinary," speaking with false bravado. Since the wolf knew shortcuts, they reached the main highway in less than half a day, covering yesterday's twenty ri journey.
Even if a bear got lost and came to them, there probably isn't a human in all of Japan who would let it stay even one night. I'm part of that same group - how shameful.

Shinemon, having been helped by the animal world, goes to pay his respects in gratitude. Without any amazement, he also visited Enoshima, and when he reached Shichirigahama, seeing a large clam, he thought deeply: "The bush warbler singing among flowers and the frog living in water composing poetry - this is Japan." Sumiyoshi Myojin challenged Bai Letian, and the sparrow of Kangakuin chirped even fierce songs. Even sparrows twisted square characters, and in that light entered the sea to become clams. That said, if even those measured by the sho measure were sparrows, there would be no rice ears for humans to eat. This large clam, being originally a scholar, was enjoying itself by playing mirage, a Chinese musical piece.
