新右衛門は竜宮もあらかた見ていたが、食わぬまでも精進日には目の毒とかえるつもりに出立てると、ある格子作りの中をのぞいてみれば、医者のよし、大勢療治に来た病は十人が九人は口中を痛めた者が多く見えた。これはみな釣られて針を飲み込んでしまった仲間である。昔、彦火火出見の命が赤女という魚に釣り針を取られ給いしを、この所に尋ね来り取り返して帰られたることを、今はもう知る者もないと見えた。それと知っていれば一匹も釣れるはずはないとか、とげのある食べ物に当てられたとばかり思うのも道理である。また鯨に鮫につかれた鯨は膏薬を張ると絵のようである。さて小魚の毛が浅草川の辺に変様生じている。さすれば川水は竜宮の湯治場なのか。鯨などは湯治とは少々むつかしければ、膏薬で治すも道理なり。

Shinemon had seen most of the Dragon Palace, and thinking "even if I don't eat, on days of abstinence it's torment for the eyes," he set out to leave. Peeking into a latticed building along the way, it appeared to be a doctor's office. Among the great number of patients who had come for treatment, nine out of ten showed injuries to the inside of their mouths. These were all creatures that had been caught on fishing hooks and swallowed them. Long ago, when the deity Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto had his fishhook taken by a fish called Akame, he came to this very place to retrieve it and returned — but now there seemed to be no one left who remembered this. If the fish knew about it, not a single one would ever be caught on a hook, or so one might think. It is only natural that they assume they've been harmed by something sharp they ate. Also, a whale attacked by a shark looks just like a picture with a plaster applied to it. Furthermore, small fish scales have been found transforming along the banks of the Asakusa River. Could it be then that the river water is the Dragon Palace's hot spring resort? Since it would be rather difficult for whales to take a hot spring cure, it makes sense that they are treated with medicinal plasters instead.
♪Whether it's a medicinal plaster or a back brace, one can't say — but the most sensible argument seems to be to just apply it by hand.
