Having received the invisibility cloak and hat, Shinzaemon quietly went up to the second floor and put them on. Whether he was truly hidden or not, he himself couldn't tell, but peering out from the window at the roof, he saw three neighborhood cats sunbathing. Even as he watched them, they neither fled nor made a fuss. "So then, this form must be invisible even to cats' eyes. How interesting!" he thought, holding his breath and listening carefully.
One of the cats spoke: "Tora, you stuck your nose into it (sniffed it out)," to which Tora replied: "I swiped a piece of dried bonito, and that Osan woman rubbed against me terribly (scolded me harshly). The mistress told her to put some rice in my bowl, but she was too lazy to do it, so I was hungry and took it. Oh, and at our place too, yesterday that blasted creature just lounged around all day. I'd want to be born a cat next time around — eating mice I love and sleeping all day, there's nothing more comfortable than that!" — wasn't that a good laugh?
"I'm done with mice myself, but I can't have it said that one disappeared and then they blame me for gnawing the rice scoop. When the household goes to sleep, I can't catch a wink. Then I'm not even sleepy during the day — what's one to do? If they'd cook the mice with sansho pepper and soy sauce glaze, or even in shippoku style, I might eat them, but I can't eat them raw just like that. Even so, humans really don't know anything," the cat said.
Upon hearing all of this, Shinzaemon — struck for the first time — was utterly astonished, his guts turning head over heels.
[Cat]
"They say a chin dog knows things well and recognizes people, while cats are unruly and know nothing of joy," but I want none of that frivolous chin-dog way myself.
♪ My mistress says this one might transform into a ghost (bakeneko), but she conveniently forgets that she herself once wore your long-sleeved kimono...
