現代語訳
猫の話にうんざりして、また犬の心境を聞こうとうかがっていると、これも同じく夜回りの話をしていた。「夕べ、うろついている奴が見えたから一睡もしなかった。横丁の方でも時々飯を一杯ずつくれるから、そこも見回ってみたり。魚屋は一度食いついたから粗末には扱わない。烏が鳴くまで声を嗄らしたので疲れて、通りの中でぼんやり寝ていたら、どこのばか者か、ひどく踏みつけやがった。俺が考えてみるに、罪もない者を責めるという馬鹿者もいるものだ。ここでのことだが、俺は世間が狭いものだから、旦那主のお気に逆らってはならない。子供の主が手をくれろとおっしゃると、何度でも親しくする。とかく可愛がられるのが得だ」と話すので、新右衛門は聞いて恐ろしく感心した。

【本文】
新右衛門は、あの蓑笠の威力を知って、少し旅行気分になって、江ノ島・鎌倉・大山の辺りや箱根あたりをぶらつこうと、ただ一人で出かけた。この蓑笠さえ着ていれば、箱根も手形はいらないが、そこは大黒様、なかなか天下の関所、ここでは隠れるという字がお嫌い。その他、品川で洒落ても笠をかぶり、三軒茶屋で怒り、浜川で生きた鰈をして、やり神奈川止まり、藤沢止まりも蓑さえ着ていれば、うまいもののおや玉になれど、ここが新右衛門、大黒の気に入った正直者、それでなければ大事なものを貸してはくださらないはず。神はそこが身を知っての大きなお慈悲だ。

Growing tired of the cats' conversation, he tried to eavesdrop on the dogs' feelings, and they too were talking about their night watch duties. "Last evening I saw some suspicious character prowling around, so I didn't sleep a wink. Over in the side street they sometimes give me a bowl of rice, so I make my rounds there too. The fish seller treats me well since I bit someone once, so he doesn't treat me poorly. I barked until my voice was hoarse until the crows started calling, and when I was tired and dozily sleeping in the middle of the street, some fool stepped hard on me. When I think about it, there are idiots who blame innocent creatures for things. This is how it is here - since my world is small, I mustn't go against my master's wishes. When the young master says 'give me your paw,' I respond affectionately every time. After all, being loved is profitable." Hearing this, Shinemon was terribly impressed and frightened.

Shinemon, now understanding the power of that cloak and hat, felt like taking a little trip and set out alone to wander around Enoshima, Kamakura, the Oyama area, and around Hakone. As long as he wore this cloak and hat, he wouldn't need travel permits even at Hakone, but there lies the thing about Daikoku-sama - the national checkpoint is quite strict, and here the character for "hiding" is disliked. Elsewhere, even if he joked around in Shinagawa wearing his hat, got angry at Sangen-jaya, caught live flounder at Hamagawa, stayed at Kanagawa or Fujisawa, as long as he wore the cloak he could become like a parent to delicious food. But here's the thing about Shinemon - he was an honest man who had won Daikoku's favor, and without that, the god would never have lent him such precious items. The god's great mercy came from knowing his character.
