それよりごてん山のほうへゆくほどに
鳥の一むれちやちやくちやとなき行
ゆへこいつもおもしろさうなことゝかの
みのかさ引かけあとをしたひければ

現代語訳
それから御殿山の方へ行くほどに、鳥の一群がちやちやくちやと鳴いて行くので、これも面白そうなことだと、あの蓑笠を引っかけて後を追いかけていった。深々とした森の中を続いて覗いていると、一つの庵があって、向こうの方から来るものを見ると鳩であった。大小刀を差し、上下の装束で、こちらの鳩は袴を着て、はたと行き合ったが、その挨拶が正しく、丁寧なことは人間も恥じるべきほどであった。本当に鳩には三枝の礼があると、親より三枝下がって止まる。良い人でさえこのようであれば、親にはさぞかしと、また鳥類にも恥じ入った。
また、あの庵を覗き見ると、老人の烏が給仕して食事を勧めていた。「何かお気に入りましたら、お返し下されませ」と言えば、「いやいや、皆美味いので十分です」と言う。これらを烏には反哺の孝と言うべきかと思えば、百日親の世話を受け、百日親を養うと言う。それでは元々商売損得なしの孝行だと思ったが、なかなか老親への扱いは百年の孝行があるとも見える。いわんや人間として鳥類にも大いに恥じた。息子の烏は「今日はご飯でございます」と言うので、後を追いかけようと思った。
♪さてさて、ご無沙汰でした。まずご挨拶を。どちらへお越しでございますか。

Then, as he headed toward Goten-yama, a flock of birds went chattering by, and thinking this too seemed interesting, he pulled on that cloak and hat and followed after them. Continuing to peer through the deep, dense forest, he came upon a hermitage, and looking at what approached from the other direction, he saw it was doves. Wearing long and short swords and formal dress, the doves here wore hakama trousers, and when they met, their greetings were so proper and polite that even humans should be ashamed. Truly, doves have the courtesy of the three branches - they perch three branches lower than their parents. If even good people behave this way, how much more so toward their parents, and he felt ashamed even before these birds.
Again, peering into that hermitage, he saw an elderly crow serving and offering food. When it said, "If anything pleases you, please give something in return," the response was, "No, no, everything is delicious, so this is sufficient." Wondering if this should be called the filial piety of reciprocal feeding among crows, he recalled that they receive care from parents for a hundred days, then care for their parents for a hundred days. So this was originally filial piety without commercial profit or loss, he thought, but it seemed the treatment of elderly parents contained a hundred years' worth of filial devotion. How much more should humans feel ashamed before these birds. The son crow said, "Today we have rice," so he thought to follow after them.
