心に生をうつし筆に骨法を画は画法にして。
今門人哥麿【歌麿】か著す虫中の生を写すは是
心画なり。哥子幼昔物事に細成か。たゝ
戯れに秋津虫を繋きはた〳〵蟀蟋を
掌にのせ遊ひて。余念なし。即其生を
むさほらんことを恐れてあまたゝひいましめしに。
今の筆策誠に業の徳をかゝやかせしは。
現代語訳
心に生命を写し、筆に骨法を込める、これが絵画の法則である。
今、門人である歌麿が著すのは虫たちの生命を写すことであり、これは
心の絵画なのである。歌麿は幼い頃から物事に細やかであった。ただ
戯れに蜻蛉を捕まえ、また蟋蟀を
手のひらに載せて遊んでいた。他に気を取られることがなかった。まさにその生命を
粗雑に扱うことを恐れて、何度も戒めたのに。
今のこの筆の技は、まことに修業の徳を輝かせるものである。

To capture life in one's heart and embody bone method in one's brush—this is the way of painting.
Now, my disciple Utamaro creates works that capture the life of insects, and this is
true heart-painting. As a child, Utamaro was meticulous in all things. He would simply
playfully catch dragonflies and place crickets
in the palm of his hand to play with them, with no other thoughts in mind. Precisely because I feared he might
treat their lives carelessly, I admonished him many times.
Now this skill with the brush truly makes the virtue of his training shine forth.
