序
春（はる）の始（はじめ）の御悦（おんよろこび）恵方（ゑはう）に向（むか）ひしやん〳〵と祝（いは）ふて三 度（ど）
うち納申候 畢（おはんぬ）抑（そも〳〵）年の初の歳旦（さいたん）は詩歌（しいか）連誹（れんはい）#1の道（みち）
を以（もつ）て可申之処人々狂歌（きやうか）の会に駆（かり）催（もよほ）さるゝの間 猫（ねこ）も
杓（しやく）子も連木（れんぎ）となる谷（たに）の鴬せつかひの名を忘（わす）れ蛙（かはづ）の面（つら）に水を
かくるに似（に）たり頗（すこぶる）本屋に与（あた）へ候 訖（おはんぬ）将又年々 歳旦（さいたん）之趣向 事旧（ことふり）候間
艸草子（くささうし）摺物（すりもの）の遊（あそび）三冊二冊の年玉物 四方（よも）の人々これを狂詠（きやうゑい）す
追々（おい〳〵）御覧あらば尤 本望（ほんもう）なり心事 多（おほし）といへども大会の次（ついで）
を期（ご）するが為に委（くはしく）は腐毫（ふがう）にあたはず狂々 謹言（きんげん）

現代語訳

天明元年丑年

序文
春の始めのお慶び、恵方に向かって喜々として祝って、三度打ち納め申し上げました。さて、年の初めの元日は、詩歌や連俳の道をもって申し上げるべきところ、人々が狂歌の会に駆り立てられ催されるので、猫も杓子も連木となる、谷の鶯が世話役の名を忘れ、蛙の面に水をかけるようなものです。大変本屋に与えました。また、年々元日の趣向が古いことになってしまったので、草双紙や摺物の遊び、三冊二冊の年玉物を、四方の人々がこれを狂詠します。追々ご覧になれば、まことに本望です。心事は多いといっても、大会の機会を期するために、詳しくは筆を腐らせることができません。狂々謹んで申し上げます。

Preface
For the New Year's felicitations at the beginning of spring, we faced the auspicious direction and celebrated joyfully, offering our respects three times. Now, for the New Year's Day at the beginning of the year, we should properly express ourselves through the way of poetry and renhai (linked verse), but since people are being driven and encouraged to participate in kyōka (comic verse) gatherings, it's like cats and ladles all becoming wooden clappers, or valley nightingales forgetting their role as go-betweens, or splashing water on a frog's face. This has been quite beneficial to the bookstore. Also, since the New Year's Day customs have become old-fashioned year after year, people from all directions compose comic verses about the amusements of illustrated books and printed materials, and New Year's gift books of two or three volumes. If you gradually take a look at these, it would truly fulfill our wishes. Though there are many matters in our hearts, in order to await the opportunity for a grand gathering, we cannot elaborate in detail with our humble brush. Respectfully and humbly submitted.
