現代語訳
黒本は初心者洗い堕ちの切り口程度では、青本にけちをつけることは思いもよらずと、少し当世風をやる気になります。黒々とした自立で、赤本と連れ立ち、青本がいるのを知らない顔で通る。向こうから親分の唐紙表紙がやって来るので手こずる。
ここにまた東屋の錦絵とて美しきものあり。江戸の名物ほどあって、紅を惜しまず、ひときわ目立つ色里の衣装にて、まことに諸国で江戸絵と褒めるのももっともなり。美しき女を絵に描いたようだとは、この錦絵より良い始めなり。
吉原最近あれば、東屋の錦参でございます。

The black book (kurobon) thinks that with just the level of a beginner's washout cut-off, it wouldn't even occur to him to find fault with the blue book, and becomes somewhat inclined to try the contemporary style. With his dark, self-reliant manner, he walks alongside the red book, pretending not to notice that the blue book is there. From the opposite direction comes the boss's karakami-bound book, causing trouble.
Here again there are beautiful things called Azumaya nishiki-e (color woodblock prints). As much as Edo's famous products, sparing no crimson, with the conspicuously eye-catching costumes of the pleasure quarters, it is indeed reasonable that all provinces praise them as Edo pictures. That beautiful women look like pictures come to life - this nishiki-e is a fine beginning of such art.
Since Yoshiwara is recent, this is Azumaya's nishiki print.
The blue book is entranced by the nishiki-e, saying "What beautiful things these are."
