現代語訳
黒本と赤本は、何とかして青本に難癖をつけようと、人相記、念田引、道化、百人首などを語らい、柱隠しを盗み、一枚絵と青本の仲を裂こうと企む。
大津絵は近年不繁盛になり、大津を夜逃げして黒本の方に来たのだが、黒本の息子の小本が夜泣きして困るので、だますように「それそのように駄々を言うと、落ち人がついているお煮の念仏が出るよ。ああ恐ろしいことだ。頬がちょうへついて、それが溜まるとき急を据えるから、金と朱木のようにちゃんとだませんな。ええ、じれったいな」と言いながらだます。これが小本の「うと」という言葉の始まりである。
夜泣きのまじないと言うのも、この事である。

However, since the black book's son, the small book, cries at night and causes trouble, she soothes him by saying: "If you throw such tantrums like that, the Buddhist prayers of the fallen will appear. Oh, what a frightening thing! When it sticks to your cheek and accumulates, it causes urgency, so you must deceive properly like gold and vermillion wood. Oh, how frustrating!" This is the origin of the small book's word "uto."
What they call a charm against night crying also refers to this matter.
