現代語訳
赤本が一枚絵のところへやって来て申すよう、「貴様はまだ知らないか。青本が妹の柱は黒本と色事でこの頃黒本のところへ逃げて行き、青本も貴様はいつ頃の流行気ゆえ、あんなものに添わせるより、いろはが黒くても同じ仲間の黒本へやれば不足はない」
一人娘と婿面へ回り、「貴様を突き出そう。ただし、必ず俺が話したと言ってはならぬぞ」と、まっかな嘘をついて焚きつける。
一枚絵はこれを聞き、大きに急き、「吉原債権は...」
黒本・赤本が悪だくみをしているのを知って青本に告げれば、初めて聞き、大きに驚く。
「家にいては危ういゆえ、まず私のところへお越しなされ」
黒本が息子の小本が疱瘡をすると聞き、紅絵を見舞いに行く。疱瘡の見舞いに紅摺りの絵をやる事、この謂われなり。
英語訳
The red book (akahon) came to where the single-sheet print was and said: "Don't you know yet? Blue book's sister Hashira has had an affair with Black book and recently fled to Black book's place. Since you, Blue book, are of some old-fashioned trend, rather than pairing her with such a thing, even if Iroha becomes black, if you send her to Black book who is of the same group, there will be no complaints."
Going around to the only daughter and son-in-law's side, he said, "I'll expose you. However, you must never say that I told you this," and incited them with complete lies.
The single-sheet print heard this and became greatly agitated, "The Yoshiwara debt is..."
When they learned of the evil scheme of Black book and Red book and told Blue book, he heard it for the first time and was greatly shocked.
"It's dangerous to stay at home, so first come to my place."
When Black book heard that his son Little book had smallpox, he went to visit with red pictures. The custom of giving red-printed pictures when visiting someone with smallpox - this is the origin of that practice.
