現代語訳
東寺千軒と源氏物語は、一枚絵と青本の事情を聞いて、黒本・赤本の仕業ということを知った。「そうは言っても、方便教訓する絵草子・草双紙はこの方の仲間違いないが、いずれ本と名がつけば同じ類である。まず我々が床の間や机の上で見ているのに、赤本・黒本の仕業はもってのほかである。その繁盛・不繁盛は自分たちの心にあることなのだ。
山崎葉のありがたきも、曽良卑はの風雅に劣り、八つ橋流行の茶屋は幾田の当世に廃れる。藤色の美しきも萌黄の古風に変わり、淵瀬となる世の中である。青本もよく世に時めくに任せ、来るが良いも度々は要らぬものである。
相経生に身を空蝉では住まぬ、明石薄氷契りの橋姫と、ふっつり縁を切り、壺庭では母木々の心を安め、この良き夢の浮橋と心得、御子様方の御意に叶うように執行いたし、黒本・赤本・一枚絵も仲良くしてください」
と、ものやわらかに述べると、東寺千も「ご尤も」と意見する。
また一枚絵は「ろくに訳も聞かず陣笑に及ぼうとした事」と苦笑いを言うが、顔に似合わぬ短気者と大きに決められてしまったので、これより「決め出し」と申すのである。
見台に上る習いはまた格別である。必ず然る源氏と思うまいぞ。
やまとうたは人の心を和らぐというのも、もっともなことだ。源氏物語と東寺千の教訓にみんな承知承知と頷きをする。頭が上下されぬうちに早く帰るのがよかろう。
英語訳
Tōji Sengen and The Tale of Genji, having heard the circumstances of Single-sheet print and Blue book, learned that it was the doing of Black book and Red book. "Even so," they said, "while picture books and illustrated books that provide moral instruction are indeed different from our group, anything that bears the name 'book' is ultimately of the same category. First of all, while we are being viewed on alcoves and writing desks, the actions of Red book and Black book are absolutely outrageous. Whether we prosper or not depends on our own hearts.
Just as the precious leaves of Yamazaki may decline before the elegance of Sora's humble style, and the popular tea houses of Yatsuhashi fall out of fashion with Ikuta's contemporary trends. Even beautiful wisteria purple changes to the old-fashioned yellow-green, and the world becomes like rapids and shallows. Blue book too, though it may flourish in the world as it pleases, frequent visits are unnecessary.
Live as an experienced courtesan, don't dwell as an empty cicada shell at Akashi, completely sever ties with the bridge princess of thin ice promises, calm the hearts of the mother trees in the tsubo garden, understand this as a floating bridge of good dreams, act in accordance with the wishes of the young masters, and let Black book, Red book, and Single-sheet print get along peacefully."
Speaking in this gentle manner, Tōji Sen also agreed, saying "Indeed, you are quite right."
Single-sheet print said with a bitter smile, "I tried to mock without properly listening to the reasoning," but since he had been firmly labeled as ill-tempered despite his appearance, from this time on he came to be called "kime-dash" (the decisive one).
The custom of mounting the reading stand is quite different. Do not think this is necessarily like Genji.
The saying that yamato poetry softens people's hearts is indeed true. Everyone nodded in agreement with the moral instruction of The Tale of Genji and Tōji Sen. It would be best to return quickly before heads start bobbing up and down uncontrollably.
