八文字屋の読本、貸本屋の風呂敷より現れ出て、柳原の同じ店にいる講釈比丘尼の下り絵本描きの所へやって来た。
「さてさて気の毒にも、私も上方より下って江戸に来て、時めいていた身の上だったが、近年青本が流行ったことで、洒落本などという他愛もないもののために世間を狭められ、いかにも口惜しいことだ」と憤慨して、青本その他の地本に文句をつけようと企てる講釈比丘尼の下り絵本描きが、打ち払って笑いながら埃を払って、「これはとかく奴らに任せておきましょう」と言う。
♪「恋しい棚晒しになってはいけない」
額に八の字を寄せて話す。
下り絵本描きは、ある時赤本・黒本を招いて、秘密の会合で四方山話を振る舞った。赤本は少し飲むと赤くなるので、引野屋のどら焼を出し、四方山の話の上で、去年の春に出た青本の評判記を出して、「おのおの方の不繁盛は青本が発行されるためなので、文句をつけてください。手前は手を濡らさない工夫で、上方者も油断はなりません」と言った。
両人これを見るより腹を立てて青本を妬む。「赤本の端者とも言われた身が、赤本・黒本と言えば地獄の鬼だと思うか」

The storytelling nun's itinerant picture book artist, plotting to find fault with blue books and other local publications, brushed away and laughed while dusting off, saying, "Well, let's just leave it to those fellows."

The itinerant picture book artist once invited red books and black books to a secret gathering where he served various refreshments. Since red books turn red when they drink a little, he brought out Hikinoya's dorayaki and, in the course of various conversations, produced a review of the blue books that came out last spring, saying, "Everyone's poor business is due to the publication of blue books, so please find fault with them. I have a scheme to keep my hands clean, and we Kamigata people must not be careless."
When the two saw this, they became angry and envious of the blue books. "Though I was once called a mere follower of red books, do you think that red books and black books are demons from hell?"
