現代語訳
青本は贔屓の分け隔てなく人の目を楽しませ、世辞に賢く、粋を持つ腹として、当世の穴を探し回り、生きものである。そして毛筋ほども抜け目はなく、面々の連中には豆入りと肩を並べ、女中様方やお子様方のご贔屓で、新版の工夫に心気を凝らし、しかれどもその身驕る心なく、やっぱり空返しの紙で月並みの会を催している。
洒落本、袋綴じ一枚刷り、その他の当世本を集めて、趣向の相談をする。
「私のひいじいさんの時分、桃太郎が島へ渡り、浦島太郎が若い時分に漆絵というのが流行って、人が漆が付いたようだった。

Blue books (aobon) delight people's eyes without favoritism, are cleverly flattering, and as vessels of sophistication, they search around for the trends of the times, being living things. They have no blind spots even as thin as a hair, stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellows among the bean-filled ones, and through the patronage of ladies-in-waiting and young masters, they concentrate their efforts on innovations for new editions. However, without becoming arrogant, they still hold monthly meetings using plain return paper.
They gather sharebon (witty books), single-sheet prints in袋綴じ binding, and other contemporary books to discuss creative ideas.
