現代語訳
ここに蜷川新右衛門という侍が前州（越前）にて一休に帰依申し上げ、『無門関』の御講釈などを折々受け給わる。常に弓矢を持って狩りを好む。あるとき風邪心地して煩い、すでに臨終に近づいたので一休を申し受け、臨終の御勧めを願う。しかるところに、虚空には花降り音楽聞こえ、霊鏡四面に薫じ、紫雲たなびき、ありがたや阿弥陀の三尊来迎まします。新右衛門を迎えに現じ給う。これを見てその辺の地侍ども、羨み「さても々々ありがたや、新右衛門殿は極楽往生疑いなし」と伏し拝む。新右衛門もありがたく合掌すれば、一休からからと笑い給い、「いかに蜷川、御辺が弓矢いつのときにか用いられん。この三尊こそ怪しけれ。この三尊を射落とし給え」と仰る。
新右衛門ははっとして打ち頷き、五人張りを引き絞り、えいと放って応えして、どうと落つるを見れば、三尊来迎と見えしは古狸が化けし古狸なり。
英語訳
Here there was a samurai named Ninagawa Shinuemon who, in Zenshū (Echizen Province), devoted himself to Ikkyu and often received lectures on the Mumonkan and other teachings. He habitually carried a bow and arrows and loved hunting. One time he caught a cold and fell ill, and as he was already approaching death, he called for Ikkyu and requested final guidance. Just then, flowers began falling from the sky, music could be heard, sacred mirrors shone in four directions, purple clouds drifted by, and miraculously, the three Buddhist deities of Amida appeared for the welcoming ceremony. They manifested to receive Shinuemon. Seeing this, the local samurai in the area enviously prostrated themselves, saying "How truly wonderful! Lord Shinuemon's rebirth in paradise is without doubt." Shinuemon also gratefully put his palms together, but Ikkyu laughed heartily and said, "Now then, Ninagawa, when will you use that bow and arrows of yours? These three deities seem suspicious. Shoot down these three deities!"
Shinuemon started with realization, nodded decisively, drew his five-man bow to full draw, released it with a shout, and when he looked at what fell with a thud, what had appeared to be the three deities of the welcoming ceremony was actually an old tanuki raccoon dog that had been shapeshifting.
