現代語訳
一休が高野山に登り、世間を眺めていらっしゃったが、一山の出家たちが出てきて、いろいろとからかった。そして「また何のためにとどまるや、さん候、あまりに風景面白く候さま、一首つかまつらんと存するなり」と言った。あるころ呆けた童人が「何として和尚が口から詩歌なるか、片腹痛や」と笑った。「さらば」とて筆紙を乞うて筆を取り、杜甫が金山寺の詩を山なりに作りしことを思い出して、このように詩作し給う。一山の出家たち、肝をつぶし、存ぜぬこととて、粗言申したり。まず平にお許し給えとて、「また御名はいかに」「一休と申す」「さてこそこそ」とて御馳走申さん、ひらにご投宿をと願えども、「さらばさらば」と逃げ帰り給う。弘法大師の御影に讃を頼まんとて無理に頼めば、「ああ、むつかしや」とてその讃に言うには、「弘法大師活仏、死ねば野原の土となる」と書き給えりとなん。

英語訳
Ikkyu climbed Mount Koya and was gazing at the world when the monks of that temple came out and mocked him in various ways. They said, "What are you lingering here for? The scenery is quite interesting, and I think I shall compose a poem." A certain foolish child said, "How can poetry come from the monk's mouth? How absurd!" and laughed. "Very well then," said Ikkyu, asking for paper and brush, and taking up the brush, he remembered how Du Fu composed poems in the shape of mountains at Jinshan Temple, and composed poetry in this manner. The monks of the temple were shocked, and not understanding such things, spoke rudely. First begging his forgiveness, they asked, "What is your name?" "I am called Ikkyu." "Ah, so that's who you are!" They offered to provide hospitality and earnestly requested him to stay overnight, but saying "Farewell, farewell," he fled back home. When they persistently asked him to write a eulogy for a portrait of Kobo Daishi, he said "How troublesome!" and for that eulogy wrote: "Kobo Daishi, the living Buddha - when he dies, he becomes soil of the fields."

Mountain spring flowers bloom and fade into emptiness
Mountain welcomes connected peaks, announcing Buddha-mind also
Mountain high, near Tusita inner court, earth advances into emptiness

Mountain level, deep source transforms Buddha's troubles also
