しからばいつもの御とんさくをかけたまわるべしとて
一〳〵といかけ申べし御こたへ候へとてぞはしめける

竹截（たけきり）ほねとはならざるや
如何是（いかなるこれ）邪淫戒（しやいんかい） 答（こたへ）ていわく

現代語訳
「それならばいつものご頓知をおかけになるべきでしょう」とて、「一つ一つと問いかけ申すべし、お答えください」とて始めた。
「いかなるこれ殺生戒」 答えて言うには
「竹を截る、骨とはならざるや」
「いかなるこれ邪淫戒」 答えて言うには
「要と要を合わせずや」
「いかなるこれ妄語戒」 答えて言うには
「開いてざざんざと言わざるや」
「これが扇の破戒ではないか」と仰せになったので、「今に始まらぬお口合いですね」とて、この問答を逐一書き留めて帰られたということである。
七月の精霊祭りにたまたま棚もない、いかがしようかとて、参詣の人々が一休へと問い申す。「有縁無縁の仏をお祭りすれば、広大なる霊棚を飾りたり。皆々どうぞお拝み給え」とて連れ立ち給う。「いずこか」と御跡について行く。川に出て扇を広げて大声上げて仰せになったのは、
「山城の瓜や茄子日をそのままに手向けになれや鴨川の水」
「これなんと大きなる霊棚ではないか」とおっしゃれば、皆人「それにしてもいやとも言われぬお言葉かな」と感心した、ということである。
英語訳
"Then you should display your usual wit," they said, and began: "We shall ask you one by one, please answer."
"What is the precept against killing?" He answered:
"Cutting bamboo—does it not become bone?"
"What is the precept against adultery?" He answered:
"Does the pivot not join with the pivot?"
"What is the precept against false speech?" He answered:
"When opened, does it not make a rustling sound?"
When he said, "Are these not the fan's violations of precepts?" they replied, "This is not the first time for such wordplay from you," and wrote down this entire dialogue before departing.
During the July Obon festival, it happened that there were no spirit altars, so what should be done? The visiting pilgrims asked Ikkyu. "If we worship the buddhas of related and unrelated spirits, we shall decorate a magnificent spirit altar. Everyone, please come and worship," he said, leading them along. "Where?" they asked, following behind him. He went out to the river, spread his fan, raised his voice loudly, and declared:
"The melons and eggplants of Yamashiro, just as they are, become offerings—the waters of the Kamo River"
"Is this not a grand spirit altar?" he said, and all the people marveled, "What words that cannot be denied!"
