一休だんほうへ狗子仏性（くしふつしやう）を
さづけ給ひしに此人くしとは
いぬのこなりこれにぶつ
しやうとはがてんまいらす
と申ければさらば
とて〽いぬのこに
あやか？る？人のし
わさこそほとけ
ともなれぢこくへ
もいれと御申のとき
くしのところはやう〳〵といまめがあき
はれたかてんのまいらぬところあり
といへば〽なしといへばなしとや
人のおもふらんこたへもぞする
山ひこのこゑとあふせられ
ければかのだんほう

たつみしかぞ

山と人はいふ也

御さとりのうた

現代語訳
一休が檀方（だんぽう）へ狗子仏性（くしぶっしょう）を授け給うたところ、この人が「狗子とは犬の子のことですね。これに仏性があるとは理解できません」と申したので、「それならば」とて、
「犬の子にあやかる人の仕業こそ仏ともなれ地獄へも入れ」
と仰せになった時、「狗子のところは何とか今目が開けましたが、理解できないところがあります」と言えば、
「無しと言えば無しとや人の思うらん答えもぞする山彦の声」
と仰せられたので、その檀方は得悟してそのまま帰っていった。
八月の頃、大風が激しく吹いて、どこの家も吹き損じてしまったので、新右衛門が寺へ「御住まいはいかがですか」と見舞いに来ると、「風も当たらず静寂です」と申した時、
「我が不退転岩に建てたり吹きもせず雨にも濡れず風も当たらず」
とおっしゃったので、「御庵室は実際どちらにございますか」と尋ね申し上げた時、一休がまた、
「我が庵は都の辰巳鹿ぞ住む世を宇治山と人は言うなり」
と仰せになったので、「悟りの歌、実にありがたく存じます」とて理解して帰り申されたのであった。
英語訳
When Ikkyu taught the koan of "Does a dog have Buddha-nature?" (kushifusshou) to a lay follower, this person said, "Kushi means a puppy. I cannot understand how this has Buddha-nature." So Ikkyu replied:
"The actions of a person who follows the example of a puppy can become a Buddha or enter hell"
When the person said, "I somewhat understand the part about the dog now, but there are parts I still don't comprehend," Ikkyu responded:
"When one says 'nothing,' do people think it is nothing? Like the voice of an echo that might answer"
Upon hearing this, the lay follower achieved enlightenment and returned home.
In August, when fierce winds blew and damaged houses everywhere, Shinuemon came to the temple asking, "How is your dwelling?" Ikkyu replied, "The wind doesn't reach me, it's peaceful here," and then recited:
"My immovable rock foundation stands firm—no wind blows, no rain wets it, no wind touches it"
When asked, "Where exactly is your hermitage located?" Ikkyu replied:
"My hermitage is in the southeast of the capital where deer dwell; people call this world Mount Uji"
The visitor said, "Your enlightenment poem is truly precious," achieved understanding, and departed.
