現代語訳
一休は毎日魚の田螺を和えて肴を調え、料理して食べておられた。その町内にも檀法師がいて、苦々しいことに思い、「さあ、意見しよう」と二三人で申し合わせ、後からそろそろと付け込んで見ると、生蛸を茹でて生姜酢で食べておられる。檀法師たちは、これこそ意見の限りと思い、意見しようとしたところ、一休が言うには、「我が食う魚はみな成仏しているのだ。明日来て見なさい。食べた魚をみな生き返らせて、吐いて見せ申そう」とあるので、みなつぶやいて帰っていった。
その翌日、「さあ、一休がお召し上がりになった魚を生きながら吐くとおっしゃるのを見よう」と大勢で込み入って来て、そのことを望んだ。「いかにも、我が口より魚を仏にして吐いて見せ申そう。見なさい」とあれば、皆々「これは有り難い」と言って、目も離さずに見ていると、その時一休がいつも食べた魚をそのまま口より吐いて仏になさったが、今日はどうしたことか、吐けども吐けども口より出ない。「からだ、この魚どもは仏にはなるまい」とおっしゃられたので、皆々呆れ果てて帰っていった。
英語訳
Ikkyu would daily prepare pond snails mixed with fish as side dishes, cooking and eating them. In that neighborhood there were also temple patrons who found this distasteful and thought, "Let us go and admonish him." Two or three of them conspired together and stealthily followed him. When they looked, they saw him boiling raw octopus and eating it with ginger vinegar. The temple patrons thought this was exactly what they should criticize, and when they tried to admonish him, Ikkyu said, "All the fish I eat have attained Buddhahood. Come tomorrow and see - I will bring back to life all the fish I have eaten and spit them out to show you." So everyone grumbled and went home.
The next day, a large crowd gathered, saying "Let us see Ikkyu spit out the fish he consumed, alive as he promised." They came in great numbers hoping to witness this. When Ikkyu said, "Indeed, I shall turn the fish into Buddhas through my mouth and spit them out to show you. Behold!" everyone said "How wonderful this is!" and watched without taking their eyes away. At that moment, though Ikkyu had always been able to spit out the fish he ate from his mouth and turn them into Buddhas, today for some reason, though he tried to spit them out again and again, nothing came from his mouth. "Alas, these fish will not become Buddhas after all," he declared, and everyone left in complete bewilderment.
