現代語訳
一休も段々お年を召されたので、諸国行脚にお出になった。東海道坂の下土山のあたりにいらっしゃったところ、関の地蔵菩薩の本堂が出来上がり、この開眼を一休和尚にお願い申し上げると、「易いことです」とおっしゃって、
「菩提煩悩（悟りも迷いも）、睡裏乾坤（眠りの中の天地）、寝ても覚めても結局一人」
「仏に嘘言なし」
この四句の呪文を口に唱えなさって、その身に締めていらっしゃる古褌をもって地蔵の御首をぐるぐると巻いて、縄をかけて、「さあ、これでよろしい」とお帰りになった。宿場町の皆々は「これは近頃もったいないことである。つまらない法師を頼んで仏体を汚させてしまったことよ」と言って、大勢で取りかかり、洗い流して件の古褌も捨ててしまった。その夜、地蔵菩薩が町中村の者の夢にお告げして言うには、「昨日尊い沙門が開眼したのに、要らぬことを洗い流したことの迷惑さよ。元の通りにしなければよくない」とあるので、急いで追手を立てて、また一休をお頼みして元の通りにしたところ、祟りはなかった。

英語訳
As Ikkyu gradually advanced in years, he set out on a pilgrimage to various provinces. When he was in the area of Tsuchiyama at the bottom of the slope on the Tokaido road, a main hall for the Seki Jizo Bodhisattva had been completed, and when they requested Ikkyu to perform the eye-opening ceremony, he said it was "a simple matter."
He chanted these four verses:
"Bodhi and klesha (enlightenment and delusion), the universe within sleep, whether sleeping or waking, ultimately alone"
"Buddha speaks no falsehoods"
Then, using his own old loincloth that he wore around his body, he wrapped it around and around the head of the Jizo statue, tied it with rope, and said "There, this is good," before departing. All the people of the post town said, "This is quite sacrilegious recently. What a thing to have asked such a worthless monk to defile the Buddha statue!" A large crowd set to work washing it clean and threw away the aforementioned old loincloth.
That night, the Jizo Bodhisattva appeared in the dreams of people throughout the town and village, giving this divine message: "Yesterday a venerable monk performed the eye-opening ceremony, but you have caused me distress by washing away what should not have been washed away. If you do not restore it as it was, it will not be well." So they hastily sent messengers to request Ikkyu again and restored it as it had been, whereupon there were no more curses.
